While every Maltese village takes enormous pride in its own celebration, some festas have earned a reputation that extends far beyond their parish boundaries, drawing visitors from across Malta, Gozo and beyond. Whether it is the scale of the fireworks, the passion of the band clubs, the drama of the setting or the sheer number of people who turn out, these are the festas that leave a lasting impression.
What makes a festa stand out? For some villages it is the fireworks, with parishes investing decades of expertise into displays that genuinely rival anything produced anywhere else in the world. For others it is the band club rivalry, the historic setting, or the sheer emotional intensity of the procession. In most cases, it is all of these things combined, which is what makes attending a Maltese festa such an unforgettable experience.

If this is your first time attending a festa, our guide to experiencing a Maltese festa is a great place to start before diving into the celebrations.
The Queen of the Season: Santa Marija on 15 August
Nowhere is the Santa Marija celebration more iconic than in Mosta, where the towering Rotunda serves as the backdrop for one of the most atmospheric processions in the Maltese festa calendar. On 15 August, this feast is celebrated simultaneously across multiple localities including Mosta, Mqabba, Qrendi, Attard, Gudja, Għaxaq, Birkirkara and Victoria in Gozo, making it the single biggest festa event of the entire year. It is also a national public holiday, which means the whole of Malta stops to celebrate.
The Mosta Rotunda, formally known as the Sanctuary Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady, is home to the third-largest unsupported dome in the world1 and draws enormous crowds during the Santa Marija celebrations. A solemn High Mass celebrated by the Archbishop of Malta takes place inside the Rotunda on the morning of 15 August, before the streets outside fill with band marches, street food vendors and the anticipation of the evening procession and fireworks finale.
For those who want to experience Santa Marija on a grander scale, Mqabba and Qrendi are widely regarded as two of the finest destinations for fireworks on the island. Both villages compete fiercely with each other and with Mosta for the most spectacular show, creating an atmosphere of passionate and good-natured rivalry that is uniquely Maltese.
TheΒ St Mary's Fireworks FactoryΒ in Mqabba won the inauguralΒ Malta International Fireworks Festival in 2006Β and has since competed internationally, winning multiple competitions including theΒ Caput Lucis World ChampionshipsΒ in Rome in 20072.
The feast of Santa Marija carries a significance that goes far beyond religion and fireworks. Its connection to one of the most defining moments in Maltese wartime history makes it unlike any other celebration on the island.
- π 15 August 1942 β the convoy arrived on the feast day of Santa Marija
- π’ 14 merchant ships set out but only 5 made it to Grand Harbour
- β½ The tanker SS Ohio carried desperately needed fuel for the island
- π The Maltese saw the arrival on the feast day as a miraculous sign
- π²πΉ The event is now deeply woven into the Santa Marija celebration every year3
More Festas, More Stories: Across the Island of Malta
Malta's festa season is packed with celebrations that each carry their own distinct character and community spirit. From the dramatic waterfront setting of the Three Cities to the deep band club rivalries of Qormi, every village brings something unique to the tradition.
The festas featured below are among the most celebrated across the island, but they represent only a fraction of the 100 or so festas that take place across Malta and Gozo every year.
| π Festa | π Locality | π Usual Month | π Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Santa Marija | Mosta, Mqabba, Qrendi | August | Fireworks and atmosphere |
| Nativity of Our Lady | Mellieħa | September | Rival band clubs and community feel |
| Our Lady of Graces | Ε»abbar | September | Processions and devotion |
| St George and St Sebastian | Qormi | June | Band club tradition and rivalry |
| St Joseph | Għaxaq | June | Fireworks and early season celebrations |
| Three Cities | Vittoriosa, Senglea, Cospicua | August and September | Historic setting and photography |
The festa in Mellieħa, held in honour of the Nativity of Our Lady on 8 September, is one of the most warmly anticipated celebrations in the north of Malta. The village is home to two rival band clubs whose competition adds a layer of passionate energy to the celebrations, and the parish church, perched high above Mellieħa Bay, provides one of the most spectacular settings for a procession anywhere on the island.
The 8th of September is not just a religious feast day. It is also aΒ national public holidayΒ in Malta, commemorating the island's victory in theΒ Great Siege of 1565, when the Knights of St John and the Maltese people successfully repelled the Ottoman invasion4.
The festa of Ε»abbar, celebrated in honour of Our Lady of Graces in mid-September, is known for the deep devotion of its community and the elaborate decorations that transform the village each year. Uniquely, the patron saint of Ε»abbar is also considered the patron saint of cyclists, and the festa includes two traditional pilgrimages featuring cyclists and motorbike riders travelling from different parts of Malta towards the village.
Qormi is one of Malta's most passionate festa towns, celebrated for the depth of its band club tradition. The town celebrates two festas β St George in late June and St Sebastian in mid-July β and the rivalry between its two band clubs is among the most intense and colourful on the island. For festa enthusiasts who want to experience the full intensity of Maltese band club culture, Qormi is essential.

Għaxaq is one of the first villages to kick off the festa season, celebrating St Joseph in early June. The village is also one of the nine localities that celebrates Santa Marija on 15 August, making it one of only a handful of villages in Malta that hosts two major festas in the same year.
For a completely different atmosphere, the Three Cities of Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua offer some of the most dramatic festa settings in Malta, with their historic fortifications, narrow baroque streets and working waterfront providing a backdrop unlike anything else on the island.

Gozo's Festas: A Tradition With Its Own Character
Gozo's festas carry the same deep roots as those on the main island, but the smaller scale of the island gives them a particular intimacy and intensity that many visitors find even more memorable. With around 10 festas celebrated across Gozo each year, the island punches well above its weight when it comes to the passion and spectacle of its celebrations.
The festa in Nadur, celebrated in honour of Saints Peter and Paul on 29 June, is widely regarded as the most spectacular in Gozo. Also known as L-Imnarja, the celebration includes not just fireworks and band marches but also a traditional agricultural and crafts show and horse races through the village streets6.
- π Nadur is renowned across the Maltese archipelago for its extraordinary fireworks displays
- π The festa includes traditional horse races through the village streets
- πΎ An agricultural and crafts show is held alongside the religious celebrations
- π 29 June is a national public holiday across Malta and Gozo

Victoria, the capital of Gozo, celebrates the feast of St George in mid-July with horse races along the main street, band marches and processions centred on St George's Basilica. For a more intimate experience, the village of Xagħra celebrates the Nativity of Our Lady on 8 September, sharing the feast day with Mellieħa on the main island. Both are wonderful introductions to the Gozitan festa tradition.
Whether you are visiting for the first time or returning to a favourite celebration, Gozo's festas offer an experience that is deeply rooted in the history and tradition of the Maltese festa.
Every Festa Tells a Different Story
Malta and Gozo come alive during festa season, and no two celebrations are exactly alike. Whether you are drawn to the scale and spectacle of Santa Marija, the fierce band club rivalry of Qormi, or the intimate atmosphere of a Gozitan village festa, there is something here for everyone.
How to Find Your Perfect Festa
- Step 1 β Pick a Month π Decide when you are visiting. Summer months offer the most festas, with August being the peak of the season.
- Step 2 β Choose Your Style π Fireworks lover? Head to Mqabba. Band club fan? Go to Qormi. Want drama? The Three Cities await.
- Step 3 β Cross to Gozo π’ Do not overlook Gozo. The ferry crossing takes 25 minutes and the festas are well worth the trip.
