The Superprof Backstory
Superprof launched in 2013 with a simple goal: to make private tutoring easier to find, compare and access online.
With all the entertainment and information available on the internet, there was a gap in the market. This gap was related to education. As online communication improved, students could learn from tutors beyond their immediate area, while tutors could reach more learners without relying only on local word of mouth.
At the time, education was still mostly associated with face-to-face lessons, even though correspondence courses and distance learning had existed in different forms for generations.
In 2013, thanks to advances in Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), better webcams and more reliable internet access, online education, especially one-to-one learning, began to grow quickly. Superprof was well placed to support that shift.
After just one year, Superprof welcomed their 100,000th tutor to the platform. Two years after that, Superprof went worldwide. We had already built a strong presence in France where we first launched, becoming the number one tutoring service just a year after launching. From there, we expanded across Europe and beyond, now operating in 102 countries.

How Superprof Works as a Platform
When Superprof launched, there were several ways the platform could sustain its services:
- partnering with outside firms who would pay us to post ads on our sites
- collecting a commission from tutors' per-lesson fees
- charging students a percentage of their per-lesson fee
- setting up a subscription service to allow students the maximum availability and access to tutors
The first idea was a non-starter. We are about students getting the help they need and the tutors exercising their passion for teaching; not about promoting other companies' products.
Collecting a blanket commission from all tutors' fees was likewise not the right approach. Tutors have the right to set their own rates, and Superprof respects that. Should a tutor choose to process payments through the platform, a 10% processing fee applies — but this is entirely optional. Tutors who arrange payments directly with their students are not charged anything.
The same thinking applies to students. Rather than charging a percentage of each lesson, Superprof keeps things simple with a fixed monthly Student Pass, so there are no surprises when it comes to costs.
The fourth option became our solution. Offering a subscription service yielded the best possible value for the student's money and learning experience, while keeping the platform completely free for tutors.

How Superprof's Subscription Works
The Superprof business model is built on transparency. Both tutors and students know exactly what to expect from the platform, which is why satisfaction rates remain consistently high.
To avoid confusion, it helps to separate three different relationships: Superprof and the student, Superprof and the tutor, and the lesson agreement between the student and tutor. Each one works slightly differently.
Superprof and the students
Students pay a €9 per month fee for their Student Pass subscription. This allows them to contact tutors across the platform. Tutor lesson fees are separate and are set by each tutor.
The Student Pass is renewed monthly. Students can cancel their subscriptions at any time on their profile via the "Student Pass" tab by clicking "Suspend".
Superprof and tutors
Tutors are not charged a fee for setting up their profile; nor do they pay Superprof to maintain their profile page.
Tutors are free to set their hourly rates based on their experience, qualifications, teaching style, subject area, lesson format and any travel or preparation time involved.
Students and tutors
Your subscription fee is separate from the per-hour fee your tutor advertises on their profile page.
Once you have found the right tutor and no longer need to contact new tutors, you can suspend your Student Pass. You can still continue lessons with tutors you have already contacted, while paying their lesson fees separately.
If a tutor chooses to process lesson payments through Superprof, a 10% processing fee applies. Tutors can also arrange lesson payments directly with students, in which case Superprof does not take a commission.
