About Ian
I teach because I believe everyone should have the ability and the avenue to express themselves in the way that they want. Not every person is going to find that expression in music, but I want to make sure that I can reach the people that do and give them the best chance possible. Music to me, is a gift in my life and it was given to me by my teacher and my parents. They never tried to corner me into a way of playing or thinking, they cultivated the love for music that I was showing them and pushed me to keep exploring those parts of myself. I want to be that teacher for you, whether you are interested in piano, clarinet, producing, marketing, songwriting, singing, mixing, mastering, or playing in a garage band. I've done it all, and I want to help you find a path that is rewarding.

I work to inspire my students to grow and find joy in the art that they make, rather than cornering or teaching in an "old-school" or “rigid” way. I teach beginner all the way to advanced piano. My lesson plans usually consist of:
1. Connection - Catch up, connect with your inspirations from the previous week, and go over goals we set forth for the lesson.
2. Building Fundamentals - Scales and chord practice, varying levels of difficulty between intervals, voicing, progressions, and octaves depending on where you are at.
3. Main Pieces - I focus on phrases of the piece rather than lines on the page, we work at your pace through the fingerings, the notes, the dynamics, and then the phrasing and memorization of them. Once we have those down, we can work on the overall arch and meaning of the piece, recordings, and references that you can listen to.
4. A Show Off Piece - We always want a song we can play for our family and friends that we are proud of. This is your chance to show off!
5. Recommendations - Listening is just as important as practice, so I always like to “give” and “get” a song recommendation from my students. It keeps me accountable for your growth, and it gives you the chance to expand into genres you might not normally listen to. Audiation is to music as thought is to language. We are organizing our musical thoughts.
6. Free Playing - No expectations, rules, or ideas in your head. This time is to explore and find joy in our playing. Let's get you "off the page" and "on"to the keys!
