About Azael

I am certified (by my Federal Aviation Administration and Transport Canada pilot licenses) to be english proficient. Currently I am pursuing to become a flight instructor in Canada. My mother tongue is Spanish. While undergoing my PPL training in Arizona, back in 2016, I was the only Spanish speaker in a small village where we lived. Most of my roommates and neighbours were from India, Indonesia and even Japanese/Brazilian. I found funny that the first thing they used to say after telling them I was from mexico was "you should teach me spanish!". It was as a joke most of the time, but a few people really wanted to learn and eventually we sat down and had “classes”. It was during this time (trying to teach a bunch of people for whom English was sometimes their 3rd language) that I had to come up with ways to really simplify the language, while maintaining the bone structure intact. Long story short, I kept doing that as a hobby even after I came to Canada. Most recently I’ve been tutoring High school students in the White Rock/Vancouver Area who take Spanish as a second language. I help them with their projects, reading comprehension and reviewing before tests.

About the lesson

My method is intended as an aid more than a full-on course. It can be adapted to the level of knowledge you posses. Eg, maybe you just decided to learn a new language and want help grasping the basics or maybe you need help reviewing the semester for you final exam.
The core of this method is that you understand what’s behind the little things that seem to make Spanish “complicated”.
I’ve noticed (specially in high school students) that a lot of the teaching is memorizing and then spitting it back out. But there is no real try at making the student understand the why. I’m not saying it’s wrong, there are things that you must memorize and there is no other way around it; verbs (specially irregular verbs), vocabulary, etc...
But if you teach the student to reason the bare bones of what he is reading or writing from the beginning (it may slow the learning at the start, but in the long run)when they get a grasp of the concept, they can keep evolving (or upgrading if you will) the knowledge by themselves. So when they hear a word that wasn’t in the study guide or a question that might have not been asked before, they have the resources by themselves to try to figure out, by context or reason, the meaning. Instead of blocking themselves in “I don’t know”.

Al is an incredible person who knows how to teach the material in a way that resonates with anyone. He is very generous. We usually did hour sessions but if I wasn’t understanding something, he would gladly stay and help me free of charge. I was a mediocre Spanish student at best, then I met Al and my ability to speak and read vastly improved. Because of him I eventually received an A in the class. I highly recommend Al because of his great character and teaching skills.
