Wondering where you are in your running journey? Perhaps you have only recently started alternating between walking and jogging, you run a comfortable 5K at weekends, or you are already training for longer races. Knowing your current level can help you choose sessions that are challenging without being unrealistic.

This running quiz looks at your habits, endurance, pace and approach to training. It is not a medical or professional fitness assessment, but it can give you a useful starting point for setting your next goal. Answer honestly rather than choosing the response that sounds most impressive. Your result will be more helpful when it reflects what you can do consistently.

Now that you have a better idea of your running level, treat the result as a guide rather than a fixed label. Fitness changes with regular training, recovery, illness, stress and time away from exercise. A beginner can progress within weeks, while an experienced runner may temporarily need to rebuild after a break.

What to Do Next

Based on your quiz result, here is some personalised advice to help you move forward, whether you are just lacing up your trainers or chasing a new personal best.

Beginner Level

Start with short, manageable sessions and focus on consistency. Alternating between walking and running is a sensible way to build confidence without expecting every workout to be completed continuously. A structured beginner plan such as Couch to 5K uses three weekly sessions, rest days and gradual increases in running time. Repeat a week when necessary rather than rushing to keep up with the schedule.

Your first goal could be running for 20 or 30 minutes, completing 5K at any pace, or following your plan for a full month. Comfortable shoes, an easy pace and regular recovery matter more than speed at this stage.

Running in Malta’s Heat

During Malta’s hotter months, schedule outdoor runs for the early morning or late evening whenever possible. Reduce your pace or distance when conditions feel unusually demanding, carry water and avoid treating a hot-weather session as a test of toughness.

Intermediate Level

Once you can run regularly and recover well, add variety rather than making every session faster. A balanced week might include an easy run, a longer run and one focused session, such as short intervals, hill repeats or a controlled tempo run. Increase only one main challenge at a time, whether that is distance, speed or frequency.

Strength exercises for the legs, hips and core can also support your running. Keep easy days genuinely easy, since improvement comes from recovering from training as well as completing it.

Advanced Level

Advanced runners usually benefit from training towards a specific outcome. That might mean improving a 5K time, preparing for a half-marathon, completing a marathon or becoming stronger on hills. Build your plan around the demands of that goal and include recovery, mobility and strength work rather than relying only on more kilometres.

Set a Running Goal

For a local target, Malta offers road races over several distances. The Malta Marathon and half-marathon routes combine countryside and urban sections, pass through areas including Mdina and Ta’ Qali, and finish on the Sliema promenade. A realistic race goal can give your training greater structure.

Whatever your result, progress does not have to mean running farther or faster every week. Better pacing, consistent training, improved recovery and greater enjoyment are all signs that you are developing as a runner. Choose one practical goal, give yourself enough time to work towards it and reassess your level after a few weeks.

I have a strong interest in travelling, reading, and football, as each journey feels like opening a new chapter. When I’m not on the move, you’ll likely find me enjoying a good read or out on the football pitch.
