About Charlie
Hi, I'm Charlie! I live near Edinburgh, in East Lothian, Scotland.
Since signing my first publishing deal with EMI Music Publishing back in 2005, I've co-written songs with and for successful artists in the UK and internationally, including Simply Red, Melanie C, Marco Mengoni, Michael Patrick Kelly, Colin Blunstone, (The Zombies) LEA and Michael Schulte. My music has also been used in advertising campaigns for brands like Nivea, Mitsubishi, Samsung and Audi Quattro.
Along the way I've turned my hand to all sorts of projects - from co-writing a World Cup football anthem for German TV ("Come Back as Heroes," performed by The Parlotones) to playing bass on and co-producing the theme song for a Thomas the Tank Engine movie.
I've put in my 10,000 hours honing the craft - melody, lyric writing, riffs, hooks, structure, chord progressions, and writing and arranging guitar parts - everything that goes into making a song and its arrangement as good as it can be. I also bring a lot of studio experience as a singer, guitarist and bassist.
Teaching and mentoring songwriters has become a real passion of mine, and I've found it's given me a unique ability to connect with people and bring out the best in their writing.
Ultimately, I'm here to help you make music you're genuinely thrilled about - whether it's just for you, or something you want to share with the world.

About My Lessons:
My approach is hands-on and tailored to you - there's no fixed curriculum, because every songwriter has different strengths, gaps and goals. Whether you're bringing a half-finished idea, a lyric you're stuck on, or you're starting from a completely blank page, we'll work with what you've got and build from there. Let me bring in my 20+ years of experience as a pro writer to help you elevate your songs!
Depending on what you need, we'll cover areas like:
Lyric writing, storytelling and finding your authentic tone and voice
From personal to universal - telling YOUR story but making it relatable
Melody, hooks and song structure
Chord progressions and arrangement and how to incorporate hooks.
Troubleshooting - Learning to harness the power of the rewrite.
Lessons are typically 60 minutes, though I'm happy to adjust to 30 or 90 minutes depending on what works best for you. I always tailor the pace and depth to the individual rather than rushing through a generic lesson plan.
With over 20 years as a signed, commercially successful songwriter and industry professional, plus experience teaching and mentoring students at BIMM Berlin and LCCM in London - I bring real, practical insight from inside the industry, not just theory.
My lessons are suitable for all levels, from complete beginners writing their first song to intermediate and advanced writers looking to sharpen their craft, prepare for a career, or get songs pitch-ready for artists and sync opportunities. I teach teenagers (with parental consent) through to adults, both online and in person.
