About Yvonne

Those whom I have tutored or taught over the years believe that I just was born with the knowledge I have now. Nothing could be further from the truth.

To begin with, I didn't graduate high school. I was my mother's caregiver until she passed away. I was 15 at the time. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. At 18 I started junior college. I was in pre-Algerbra. I failed it 3 times in a row. At that point, I thought getting a higher education was going to be out of my reach.

I took time off of school and did a lot of things. When I was in my late 20s I decided to go back to junior college. Again I was having problems, and this time it was in Algebra. I wasn't doing great again. I managed to get through it and started tutoring at the junior college I was attending.

I was trying to pass Geometry so I wouldn't have to take the assessment test to get into a four-year university. That is when I met with the man that changed my whole outlook on Mathematics. He broke it down so I could understand it. He was such a good instructor I wound up taking another 4 math classes from him. I learned what it was to be a great teacher and to put the student first. I have patterned his teaching style into the classrooms I have taught in.

What I also learned during that time is a great teacher makes all the difference in a student's life. It's easy to say you can't, but it takes courage to say I can and will.

About the lesson

I have been teaching and tutoring students of all ages over the past 30 years. I work in my home. I also take on remote learners using the Zoom platform.

I work with my students one-on-one. I work with them on their homework. I do not bring in work that is not assigned, such as extra problems unless I believe the student needs it.

When I initially sit down with a student within an hour I can see where the student is lacking and work with them to improve their basic skills. I do not give assessment tests. I like to jump in with the students where they are and go from there.

I have found that one of the problems with all subjects is not a lack of knowledge, but a lack of confidence in the students themselves. I also had a problem with math. What made the difference for me was when I found a teacher I could relate to.

This was the reason I do what I do today. Without the guiding hand of that individual and others I have met along the way I would not be where I am today.
