About Joanna
I am a Screenwriter and a Doctor of Education, an award-winning writing and research development specialist with thirty years’ experience working in higher education. My background is in English Literature and Linguistics. I have worked extensively with undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral students, academics and researchers across disciplines and international contexts.
I see writing as an expression of voice and identity. My role is to support creative and academic writers to express themselves at different stages of their journey, whether they are brainstorming a story idea, writing a script, drafting a short essay or a thesis chapter, revising an article for publication, or learning how to respond effectively to feedback.
I have a Master's degree in English Language Teaching (2002), and a Doctorate in Education (2009), specialised in International Education.
In 2024, I won the Lord Dearing Award (University of Nottingham) for Teaching and Learning, for outstanding contribution to the enhancement of the student experience.

My approach to writing coaching and support is developmental rather than corrective. In my 1-on-1 online 60-minute sessions, I work collaboratively with writers, giving feedback on written work, to help them understand their own writing processes, make informed decisions, and develop strategies they can use independently in future projects.
As a screenwriter:
️ I work with writers based on their specific needs to workshop individual scripts, focusing on writers' individual vision for their story, starting from story idea to outline to script writing.
️ I provide script analysis and script coverage, commenting on concept, voice, plot, dialogue and character work.
As an academic writer:
I provide tailored support in argumentation, clarity, coherence, engagement with literature, thesis and dissertation writing, and writing for publication.
I emphasise feedback literacy and effective revision strategies for essays and assignments. I work with undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral researchers, and academics across disciplines and international contexts.
