About Nellie

Hello, nice of you to visit my profile! But first things first: If you’re looking for a traditional teacher to guide you through the basics or follow a structured approach, I must say upfront that I am not the teacher for you. BUT if you’re someone learning Finnish out of linguistic curiosity, have that tendency to get stuck on the smallest details wishing someone could just explain it to you so that you can move on, or would love to get high-quality example sentences or translations of phrases with in-depth explanations of the grammar and nuance, I’m definitely the teacher you’ve been looking for.

I’m rather obsessive with languages and linguistics and have always wanted to find someone who was equally interested in the minute details of grammar, phonetics, and semantics, but who didn’t charge astronomical fees, justifying it with their qualifications and knowledge. That’s fine too, don’t get me wrong! But there’s definitely a niche gap in the market for such tutors, and I hope to offer exactly that to those few linguistics-minded people in the world crazy enough to start learning Finnish.

As a language learner myself, I have studied Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Hindi, and Marathi in my free time, and German, Russian, and Swedish in school, over the past 10 years, with a focus on etymological links through historical forms (esp. Middle Chinese and Sanskrit roots), phonetics, and script. I also do computational linguistics as a hobby, mostly in the form of lower-level NLP (normalisation of different scripts and spelling variation) and corpus analysis, with a little bit of dabbling into pos tagging and dependency parsing. Besides my language projects taking up most of my time, my side hustle is being a university student of mathematics with a focus on theoretical computer science.

About the lesson

The biggest problems I’ve come across in language learning have been the lack of 𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙖𝙡 language resources and any proper break down of nuance. Textbook language is not really used anywhere outside that context, colloquial grammar patterns and vocabulary get little to no attention in linguistics, and too many phrase lists (and even books!) these days are just AI-generated garbage. So learning how a language is actually used is extremely difficult without a native speaker’s help. That’s where I come in. To answer the question: “How do you say this? No, I mean, 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮. And why?”.

I’d be happy to translate phrases and grammar patterns, explain grammar, idioms, and vocabulary, and generate example sentences based on a topic of your choosing (for example “how to express opinions”), with in-depth explanations of the structures and vocabulary used.

I’m also very familiar with IPA and phonetics if you’d like to learn about or improve your own pronunciation from a more detailed and theoretical perspective, or would want any sentences phonetically transcribed. I’d be happy to provide audio too to help you distinguish the sounds or for shadowing!
