About Vaana Zongxi

My name is Vaana and I am a soprano, concert and collaborative pianist based in New York. Before moving to NYC, I studied both piano and voice at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, Austria, receiving two Bachelor’s degrees. When it came time for graduate school, I was accepted into both piano and voice Master’s degrees at both Cleveland Institute and Manhattan School of Music. Due to restrictions on receiving double degrees in the US, I am now the recipient of a master's degree in classical voice performance at the Manhattan School of Music in 2026.

My studio is open to dedicated students of all levels and genres- from beginners to aspiring professionals. I have plentiful experience teaching young kids from the age of 4 and currently have several young students that learn musical theatre and pop with me.

Alongside my vocal and pianistic training, I bring years of professional experience as a collaborative pianist and opera répétiteur. I have coached singers for auditions, recitals, competitions and recordings, and played for major opera productions in Salzburg and Singapore, including operas such as I Pagliacci, Rusalka and Rigoletto.

As an operatic singer I have worked with many renowned sopranos such as Barbara Bonney and Rosalind Plowright. Having spent six years in Salzburg, I am also fluent in German in addition to English and Mandarin. I am especially helpful with German repertoire, but I am well-versed in all classical repertoire languages - Italian, French, German and English.

My operatic roles so far include First Lady in Die Zauberflöte, Frasquita in Carmen, and Fortuna in L’incoronazione di Poppea. In 2025, I was also chosen to compete in the San Diego District of the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition.

About the lesson

As both an opera singer and concert pianist with years of experience accompanying singers and professional opera productions, my unique strength is that I can play for you in our lessons. Instead of just a voice teacher at the piano, you're effectively getting a private vocal coach and répétiteur in one - something that is normally a separate job (and fee!) in a conservatory setting.

In our sessions, we'll tailor personalized plans to you or your childrens' goals: building healthy technique, musicality, clear diction and style while working directly with live accompaniment. We can prepare for auditions, exams, competitions, recordings, school shows etc. or just sing for joy and confidence. You will not only learn how to sing the notes, but also rehearse like a professional singer, communicate with pianists, and bring your interpretations to life from your very first lesson.

**My studio is open to students of all levels and genres such as musical theatre and pop. Group lessons are also available for families with multiple children.
