About Syed

Faculty in applied econometrics, research methodology, microeconomics, and business & social statistics courses for over 2 decades.

I have published journal articles and papers in international conference proceedings and supervised theses in domains of economics, political economy and interdisciplinary aspects of social sciences and humanities (SSH). I have vast experience in research, including roles as senior research fellow, coordinator of research, and consultant on contractual projects.

I am humbled by the confidence of students (from the University of Oxford, The University of Chicago, McGill University, LSE, The Smith School of Business, and others) and professionals (international development professional researcher at UNCDF, a visiting scholar at Harvard University, the MD at NSF, senior advisers in government-affiliated institutions, and many more), who sought guidance for their professional needs, and wrote lovely reviews for me.

Expect clarity of mind, proficiency, and deep understanding, if you are uncertain about apparently complex theoretical and applied aspects of economics/ econometrics/ statistics or have problems in interpretation of results!

✦ For regular curriculum teaching, using examples, graphs, and equations, I explain and narrate apparently complex topics in a way that suit your aptitude. Simplification is used at times so that in due course of time, your involvement and confidence are restored.
✦ For Analyzing the data, I use Stata, SPSS or Nvivo. Emphasis is on choice of methodology, interpreting results and noting limitations.
✦ During meetings, I take notes and while concluding the session, notes and files are sent to you, so you can concentrate during our communication.
✦ You can ask for the critical evaluation of completed research or the thesis and getting technical instructions: identification of mistakes and concrete suggestions for improvement.

Details

Mentioned fee is for regular discussion on topics, following a course outline. However, for guidance in research project, thesis, troubleshooting with the data, data analysis, or discussion on past examination papers, I will duly communicate the hourly fee, after evaluating your specific needs.

For contextual guidance in research projects or the thesis, if you feel that I should review your work, I can inform you about my time allocation on the review process. Also, instead of scheduling meetings, you can ask for the written feedback: identification of mistakes and concrete suggestions for improvement about the write-up, methodology, and analysis parts of your project.

In the complimentary session, we get to know each other, discuss your problems and academic concerns, and plan when to schedule meetings and how to proceed further. The formal discussion on course contents or on your project will be initiated after this complimentary session.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My fondness for the teaching profession has been traced to the stage of my schooling: when I and my siblings used to ask our parents about different occupations and professions, so that every one of us can choose a plausible career path, accordingly. I can clearly recall that my father used to say that though prophets and saints opted for quite a few professions, teaching and health care are always regarded as incredibly noble professions. I can say that the strong literary background of my parents predominantly appreciated my respect for the teaching profession.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

My learning and teaching interests include Quantitative methods: Mathematical modeling; Econometrics; and Statistics, core subjects in Economics such as Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, and Mathematical Economics, while the heart of my academic proficiency lye in thesis supervision, in the domain of Social Sciences and humanities. So far, I have supervised over 141 theses of Honor, Master's, and at M.Phil levels.
Regarding digitalized computational/ analytical skills, I am proficient in using Stata, SPSS, Minitab, Statgraphics, Maple, WinQSB, Nvivo, and Turnitin, both in my teaching as well as in my research experience.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I can clearly mention that I am providential enough that my father suggested me opt for Economics, Statistics, and Mathematics as soon as I completed my schooling, as he viewed these subjects more closely to my nature. Throughout my career, whenever my temperament and skillfulness are appreciated by my students or at International forums, I always thanked my late father, for assessing me so well. As I was duly equipped with different aspects of quantitative methods due to my long-standing interest, I enjoyed quantitative proficiency not just in my teaching experience but predominately in my research experience as well.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A strong background in quantitative skills is a prerequisite for quite some time as there has been an intense use of Descriptive and Inferential Statistics, Econometrics & Regression analysis, Mathematics of chance: Game Theory as well as the mathematics of optimization: Linear/ nonlinear/ integer/ goal programming, etc, in academic curricula and in research. Secondly, I feel that a good teacher essentially should have a good sense of observational psychology: within a short conversation, he/ she should carefully assess the personalized needs of the student. And last but not the least, good communication skills: the ability to make simplifications; a wide choice of vocabulary, and an easy-going conversation style.
While tutoring, the timing/ stage of seeking student response/ feedback is always very important: un till I feel that the student has grasped something, the feedback of the student is always being invited with a pause, so that he/she can participate effectively, without losing confidence/ faith.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

At the young age of 24, I was invited as visiting Professor to teach Econometrics in master's classes. I had to spend days and nights before the semester started, to fully grasp the subject as well as to fully absorb lecture contents, as part of my understanding. Getting such a tough assignment at a young age developed my temperament, and for the rest of my career, this time investment amused me a lot.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

I am a bit skeptical that in the last around one decade or so, due to the extensive use of digital/ mobile gadgets and social media, we have witnessed that the ability of students to concentrate on academics has adversely been affected. Simultaneously, the habit of consulting books and libraries also witnessed slackness.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Potentially, I can manage to explain how students can be benefited through digitalization in education, specifically in the domain of research. Secondly, I can arrange seminars on the incidence of plagiarism, how its incidence is being detected, how to avoid it naturally, and what legal complications can arise if its incidence is established.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P)?

Precisely, I can say that I have sizable experience teaching in the above-mentioned subjects; lots of experience as a thesis supervisor; have 13 journal publications in the Norwegian Database of Scientific publication (NSD); was invited as an International guest at Peradeniya International Economics Research Symposium in 2014; worked as a consultant on two contractual projects; and last but not the least, I have 14 International conference proceedings.
