About Carl
When teaching Animation and Game Art Design students (ages anywhere from 17 to 50 or so) It was imperative that they develop entry level professional level skills. The overwhelming majority did not initially have those skills so with the limited contact time I had with them I needed an approach that was effective at improving their skills as quickly as possible. Based on my experiences and success I am writing a book about the subject of rapid drawing skill development.

I would first establish their developmental stage by looking at their current work, and then recommend a series of drawings that I would then analyze with them to determine their issues and how to gain rapid improvement. Seeing (as an artist) is the fundamental basis for accurately portraying a subject. By looking at a student's current work I can figure out how well they are "Seeing" and if there are problems, to tackle them immediately. Usually, I use copying and some still life drawing that I use to assess and use to correct. If they see well, then it is a matter of establishing and/or increasing "Imaginative Range" (how much visual knowledge they possess). For years I taught classes to college level students who aspired to careers in the animation industry, and they needed to be able to draw accurately and with professional level skill to be hired. I had classes filled with students of wildly different skill sets. A very few had those skills to begin with, so I needed to challenge them to improve. Most however needed their specific deficiencies addressed. I can't teach you to draw in a relatively short time period. Drawing skill is not an on-off switch it is a continuum and each of us is somewhere on that slope. I am very good at is teaching a student how to self-correct (Understand their own errors) and by that teach themselves. My teaching involves lots of copying and correcting by me. Once a student has seen what sorts of visual discrepancies I look for they begin to see them themselves, and they are on the road to self-correction.

Perfect! Today was our first session, so it was a time for me to evaluate his teaching style and for him to evaluate my skill level and the areas where I am weak. I think we both achieved those ends. I look forward to another session soon.

Perfect! I highly recommend Carl, the art teacher of my 13 years old.
My son is in the TAP - Talented Art Program at school. At this point, he feels that the lack of fundamentals of drawing and sketching is affecting his ability to express himself creatively. I was looking for an art teacher for a while until we came across Carl.
Carl's knowledge of art technique, theory, and practice is incredible. Even more impressive is his ability to transfer his knowledge to his students. he also has a lot of helpful, practical advice.
I feel that Daniel can continue to develop as an artist under his guidance.
I feel very fortunate that we found Carl.- See the response Carl :

Mr. Carl was one of my first teachers to introduce me to the fundamentals of drawing at the Art Institute. I learned a lot from him and his feedback always helped me see things from a different persepective.
His words were always encouraging and his criticisim was very constructive. I am so glad to learn from such a great artist with tons of expertise.Carl is kind, patient and full of knowledge. He always had time to answer questions and give demonstrations. He will always hold a special place in my heart as one of my favorite college professors. On top of all that he is an AMAZING artist!
During my time at the Art Institute of Seattle (2002-2005), he was my drawing instructor and mentor. He's always very honest, insightful and inclusive to his students. With his years of experience, I've learned so much about not only about art but a better understanding of what I'm capable for myself. Now I'm a professional 3D animator in the game industry and will always carry the great memories, the work ethic, and the lessons he's taught me. Thanks Carl!
Carl Jackson is my favorite traditional drawing teacher back when I'm studying at the Art Institute. His teaching techniques and criticism really helped me in my art journey.
- SuharjoI had the pleasure of having Carl as my instructor in college. He has wonderful teaching style and I use many of lessons learned from him for the foundation of so many of my drawing techniques I've used for years at this point. Carl is a master teacher in my opinion and you'd be hard pressed to find anyone more capable of teaching drawing.
I had Carl as a teacher when I was in art school and he was incredible. He’s such a talented artist and a wonderful teacher. His patience, critique and knowledge helped me excel and feel more confident in my own artwork. I highly recommend him!
-TaylorI knew Carl Jackson as a fellow faculty member and then as a department director. Carl is one of the best! Valued by students because of his immense drawing skills, and trusted that their talent paired with learned skill would improve under his tutelage. He has an excellent reputation among his peers as well, as a colleague and friend.
Carl is a very patient and caring teacher and tutor. When I was taking a difficult bitanical drawing class he helped me with techniques to improve my drawungs and give me confidence. He is also an amazingly talented artist.
I worked with Carl in his capacity as a full-time faculty member at an arts college, and he was one of our most trusted and best loved teachers. He is not only an accomplished artist, he excels at teaching drawing to all levels of students and was a key tutor for us in addition to his teaching responsibilities. I highly recommend him!
I worked with Carl at a college in Seattle and always found him to be a consummate professional. Carl is a talented designer and artist that has that rare ability to transfer his knowledge to students, so the information becomes clear for them to understand.
