About JAMES
I graduated from VCU in 2019 with a BS in Biology, a BA in Gender studies, and a minor in chemistry. I performed undergraduate research for a large cancer research center studying the effects of chemotherapy on peripheral neuropathy in mice before spending two years in the pharmaceutical industry. I returned to cancer research for a year to study the relationship between regulatory T-cells and metastatic breast cancer, and then moved on to a job working as an analytical chemist for a manufacturing facility. I have recently moved to Blacksburg, VA to begin my DVM/PhD program where I am studying novel ablation techniques for brain cancer in dogs.

I know what it's like to struggle with science! Every student learns differently and sometimes classroom lectures make biology feel inaccessible. I have three years of industry experience, a BS in biology, and now my time in graduate school under my belt, in which time I have learned several different ways of learning and teaching hard subjects and applying them in contexts that just make sense. I tailor my teaching to the student and try to use the "what, what, why" method to make information feel relevant, accessible, and applicable.
