About Chris

I have been a teacher for 30 years, from elementary to university. My favourite subject to teach is English, especially Writing. This makes sense, as my degrees are Bachelor of Arts (English), Bachelor of Education (Primary/Junior/Intermediate), Master of Education (Teaching English as a Second Language).

About the lesson

I am a very positive, solution-focused person. My main subject, English, is a lifelong passion that I love to share with others. In a teaching career that spans three decades, I have taught English to a wide range of learners, from highly motivated and confident students, to those who are struggling and looking for a way forward. Every situation has challenged me to come up with ways to help students become more proficient and expressive in English. The bottom line for me is having my students get the results they are seeking.

When I meet a student, the first task is to make an assessment of strengths and weaknesses. It's important for every student to proceed from a place of capability and power, even as they are striving to improve. Next, specific learning goals need to established. From that point on, it's all about collaboratively mapping out the most efficient and beneficial pathway to achievement.

I believe that together with hard work and concentration, there should also be time for humour and personality. Learners are most effective when they are able to be themselves. Another important consideration is that all students are different. We all learn with different combinations of reading, observation, instruction and examples. My teaching method relies on observing what works for individuals and designing programs that are best suited to their unique needs.

Finally, I should say that a teacher's job is to help students move forward and reach their goals. So, while I will offer multiple options and creative ideas, I will not ghostwrite for my students. To paraphrase the proverb: "Give a person a fish, and you feed them for a day. Teach a person to fish, and you feed them for a lifetime." That is not only my philosophy of teaching, but my overall approach to life.
