About Nicole
I am a native French speaker and a university professor of French, translation and interpreting, with over twenty years of teaching experience. I hold a PhD, CAPES (the French teaching qualification), Qualified Teacher Status and a Distinguished Teaching Fellowship. Teaching is not just my profession but my vocation, and I care deeply about helping every student succeed.
What I bring beyond qualifications is patience and genuine warmth. Learning a language, or tackling demanding academic work, can feel daunting, so I create a supportive space where you can make mistakes, ask anything, and grow in confidence. Whether you are working towards an exam, learning French for the first time, consolidating your French for business purposes or seeking specialist support at university level, you will be in experienced and caring hands. My teaching is patient, structured and tailored to each learner. I begin by understanding your goals and current level, then build a clear plan towards them. I work across all four skills, reading, writing, listening and speaking, combining solid grounding in grammar and vocabulary with plenty of conversation and usable, specific feedback. Confidence and competence grow together, so my lessons are encouraging as well as rigorous.
I teach at every level and for every purpose:
School students preparing for GCSE and A-level French: grammar, speaking confidence, exam technique and the skills that lift a grade.
Adults learning French from scratch or building conversational fluency, at a pace and on topics that suit you, whether for travel, study or pleasure.
Professionals needing French for business, from meetings and correspondence to client relationships and relocation, taught around your working life.
For university students and specialists, I offer support that very few tutors can:
Translation and interpreting: practical French-English translation in both directions, interpreting skills, and preparation for translation and interpreting modules and assessments.
French literature, film and culture: close reading, essay preparation and critical analysis across French and Francophone texts and cinema.
Critical and cultural studies: gender and feminist theory, race and postcolonial studies, ecocriticism and the environmental humanities, and visual culture, taught within French and Francophone studies and readily applied to other literatures, film and disciplines.
Academic writing and study skills: structuring arguments, writing with clarity, and the research and referencing skills that university work demands.
Lessons are usually 60 minutes, with shorter sessions for younger learners and longer ones for in-depth university work. I teach both online and in person.

Details
I teach online everywhere at my standard rate, and this is often the easiest and most flexible option. In-person lessons are free of travel charges locally, within about five miles. For longer distances I ask a contribution towards travel time and costs, £10 from five to ten miles and £18 beyond ten miles, though online is always available instead at the standard rate.
My rate is the same across all levels, so school students, adults and university learners are all welcome at £45 an hour, tuition from a native French speaker and university professor qualified across school and higher education.
All teaching materials and tailored resources are included in the lesson fee, shared digitally so you can access them any time. There are no hidden costs: the hourly rate covers preparation, materials and feedback.
Lesson packs are available for students who would like to commit to regular sessions. The free first lesson is a chance for us to meet, discuss your goals and plan how best to work together, with no obligation.
For younger learners I am happy to arrange shorter sessions, and for in-depth university work, longer ones. Please message me with any questions before booking.
