About Matthew
Matthew is a music student at the University of Oxford where he plays clarinet, bassoon and saxophone in ensembles and orchestras around the city. Having received training as part of the Hampshire Specialist Music Course, Matthew has been able to take part in numerous chamber groups which tackled a wide range of repertoire and developed him musicianship from an early age. Matthew's orchestral work has led him to perform with Hampshire County Youth Orchestra, where performances of Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra and Borodin's Polovtsian dances took him on tour around France and Spain. More recently, Matthew has been involved with the Oxford University Orchestra, as well as other orchestras having tackled Mahler's Symphony no.2 and 5, Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances, and Mozart's Don Giovanni. As a soloist, Matthew has performed works by Horovitz in Steinway Hall, London, as well as others by Mozart, Schumann and Vivaldi in venues local to him. He also has a ARSM Diploma Distinction on Clarinet As a mentor, Matthew has taken pride in helping beginner musicians by supporting his local schools' ensembles in their rehearsals and performances, offering guidance and confidence to the learners around him.

In my lessons, I emphasise the development of musicianship and skill across all areas. My goal is to inspire a true love for the clarinet in my students, rather than focusing solely on exam preparation. I encourage students to explore a wide range of musical genres, techniques, and styles, using a highly individualised approach that nurtures their creativity and personal expression. By concentrating on these aspects, I help students build a well-rounded understanding of the clarinet, and how to get the most out of your practice and playing. With patience, encouragement, and customised guidance, I strive to create a nurturing environment where students can progress at their own pace and develop a lasting passion for playing. Each lesson is typically one hour long and is suitable for students up to Grade 8 as well as those who play casually.

Matthew is a skilled and enthusiastic multi-instrumentalist with a natural talent for performance. He is able to adapt his communication and tutoring style according to the age and ability of his student . He is also extremely well-organised and reliable.
Matt is a lovely tutor who is extremely passionate about the instruments he plays, and even more so about teaching! Having seen him teach, it’s wonderful to see him put his whole heart into helping his students develop to their full potential. Would definitely recommend getting lessons from him!
Matt was very encouraging and patient with me (as someone who had never learnt a musical instrument before). He built my confidence in both playing and music theory . He has really helped me to enjoy practicing and love performing!
Matthew is a superb teacher and has really helped me advance in all aspects of my playing. He is also so well organised - an introductory pack with information and links to helpful sites really make me feel prepared for his lessons.
