I achieved 11A*s at GCSE (including full marks in English Language) and 3A*s and an A at A-Level. I scored in the top 10th percentile in the country in the ELAT and graduated with a strong degree in English Language and Literature from Lincoln College, Oxford.

I believe wholeheartedly in the power of education to change and shape lives. I have passion for the quirks and oddities of the English language, alongside a solid grasp of this country’s history, religion, and politics. Ever-curious, I have an ever-growing library and am making my way through Tolstoy, self-studying economic theory (and its flaws) and learning Russian and Vietnamese with online tutors.

About the lesson

When tutoring literature, my approach is based on the tutorial system at Oxford, on practices of close reading and discussion, on stoking students’ enthusiasm for the text with productive feedback – picking holes in arguments and pushing ideas further. I will equip students with relevant facts or critical opinions at the start of the hour to develop their ideas and provide students with an article, poem or video at the end of the session to fuel their curiosity.

Essay technique sadly often prevents otherwise bright students from accessing the top marks. When we are told that English is a subject where there are no ‘right answers’, essay writing can seem like a dark art; while there are multiple valid interpretations that can be effectively argued for, some arguments are simply better than others. More importantly, constructing an argument is often easier than it may at first seem. Debate is key to this method as students begin to think in the argumentative terms necessary for excelling in exams.

I can offer lessons on Modernism(s), Victorian literature and poetry, Early Modern Poetry or Drama, the Great American Novel, Chaucer, and Literary Theory and many others. I have a particular affinity for Shakespeare and Milton, having achieved a first for my Shakespeare coursework and my dissertation on Paradise Lost.

Regarding university admissions, I am comfortable advising students on their choice of university (or college) helping plan and edit personal statements and preparing mock interviews for prospective Oxbridge candidates. I know what constitutes a good ELAT and can set and mark practice papers, the most effective method of improving a student's mark alongside encouraging my students to read widely, slowly and well.
