About Andersen

EVERYONE IS A WRITER! When we are children, we all paint and draw and write; it isn't until the world tells us what we are and what we aren't that we begin to forget we are artists and writers. I am here to remind you that YOU ARE! Yes, punctuation, grammar, and sentence structure are important, but without the ability to know what you want or need to communicate, and without the knowledge to identify your audience and move them in a meaningful way--the rest often serves to destroy our confidence as writers. EFFECTIVE and MEANINGFUL writing is not found in a perfectly placed semicolon or a beautifully formatted MLA citation; it's found in our ability to tell a compelling story. From creative writing, to narratives, to research and data--no matter the genre--they all tell a story. My life is a very long story, filled with challenges I never imagined I could overcome, but to this point--I have, and I have learned that every moment of every day is a choice to get back up.

About the lesson

-I meet students where they are at, students do not enter college on a level playing field. I identify what students already know while setting attainable goals for growth with each lesson and/or project.

-My lesson plans are far from "typical." Rhetoric and writing are EVERYWHERE and in countless formats. My goal is to demystify writing, particularly those who don't believe they are writers. Whether it is telling a story like we all are able to--with dictation on, I show students a 5-page paper doesn't have to be a chore. When a student says "I don't know what to write," a common response is for them to picture themselves in the story they want to tell, then imagine walking through the story with me as my tour guide. What situations are best for using the Journalistic Method of Writing (Who, What, When, Where, Why, How) vs. the Rhetorical Triangle (Ethos, Pathos, Logos). If writing is the skill of using words, rhetoric is the ART. Rhetoric is persuasive messaging, in order to be persuasive the audience must be considered and understood, in order to do that we must see the humanity in those around us and in ourselves, the ways in which we are similar.

-What sets me apart as a tutor and a university instructor is my genuine and love for communicating and messaging, my contagious curiosity for learning and the excitement I get from seeing my students make connections. I don't just teach to get paid, I teach with intellectual humility and respect for the learning we can do together--I teach because I love it.

-I am experienced in teaching first year writing at the university level. Ideally, I would love to work with high schoolers working to sharpen their skills as they look toward college, college students as they approach a variety of composition styles.
