About Mary

I'm a 38-year-old academic with over a decade's worth of experience working in universities. Currently on a family-focused career break, I'm happy to share my experience with students requiring a little more one-on-one time than school teachers or full-time lecturers are able to give. Whatever your concerns about French language or literature, essay/dissertation writing or exam performance are, there's a good chance I've seen them (and graded them!) before. I'm British but am a modern languages academic, so I also have experience working with students writing in English as their second language.

About the lesson

I offer one-to-one French lessons at any level, including general conversation, GCSE and A-level/Scottish Highers, undergraduate BA and postgraduate. As an experienced researcher and academic writer, I also offer sessions for university students workshopping academic writing and methodology skills. There's a definite knack to academic writing, but it's one that university departments don't always schedule into their curriculum. If you'd like to work on your writing skills for university essays, coursework or exams, at all levels - undergraduate up to PhD and post-doc - one-on-one sessions with an experienced academic such as myself could also be a great help. I hold an MA, MLitt and a PhD, and worked in a university department (French Studies) as a lecturer for over 10 years. I have graded and provided extensive feedback on more essays, exams and dissertations than I can count, and have spent many hours coaching my students on how best to write and present their work. If you would benefit from some individual tutoring to practise, troubleshoot or fine-tune your French Studies or general writing skills, I can help. My preference is for online teaching at present; sessions are £40 per hour hour.
