About Allen
I’m a native Chinese speaker and a professional Chinese teacher, certified with a Mandarin Proficiency Test Level 2A and the CTCSOL (Certificate for Teachers of Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages).
Before teaching, I worked as a technical support engineer in a multinational corporation and later as an international patent attorney. Those experiences taught me how to take concepts that feel completely foreign and break them down into simple, bite-sized pieces—a skill I now bring to every lesson.
Now I use that same approach to help English speakers understand Chinese—not by rote, but by logic and discovery. I'll explain Chinese in a way that makes sense for English speakers.

While I use textbooks as a foundation, every lesson is customized to your goals and beginner-friendly. And because I’ve studied English for years, I know exactly where English speakers get stuck.
Take the challenge of memorizing Chinese characters, for example. Most learners struggle because they try to memorize by rote. But I help you see the logic behind them. A character is not a random drawing—it's a puzzle made of meaningful pieces.
Let me show you. Look at the character 突, which means "suddenly."
• The top part 穴 means "cave" (it has a roof 宀 with side bars 八 supporting the roof).
• The bottom part 犬 means "dog".
The image this creates? A dog rushing out of a cave—an action that is sudden and unexpected. Once you see the picture, the word "suddenly" becomes unforgettable.
This is how I teach: not by memorization, but by understanding. Whether it’s pronunciation, characters, grammar, or even poetry—I’ll help you uncover the logic, the reason, and the story behind the language.
