About Sophia
Hello! My name is Sophia Hanover, and I am a fourth-year college student graduating with a double major in Spanish Literature and Culture and Economics.
I have been studying Spanish for over 11 years and have developed strong fluency through both academic study and real-world immersion. Last year, I studied abroad in Spain for six months, where I lived with a host family who spoke only Spanish. This experience helped me become confident speaking Spanish in everyday conversations and professional settings.
I am also currently translating a Spanish play into English, which has strengthened my understanding of grammar, vocabulary, and writing. In addition, I have experience teaching English to international graduate students at my university through a program called VISAS. This experience helped me learn how to explain language concepts clearly and support students with patience and encouragement.
I understand that learning a new language can sometimes feel intimidating, especially in middle or high school. My goal is to create a positive and supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, practicing speaking, and building confidence. Whether a student needs help improving grades, preparing for exams, or strengthening conversation skills, I am committed to helping them succeed and feel proud of their progress in Spanish.

1. Warm-Up (10 minutes)
We begin with guided conversation practice. Students answer basic introductory questions such as:
¿Cómo te llamas?
¿Cuántos años tienes?
¿De dónde eres?
¿Qué te gusta hacer?
This helps build confidence and activate prior knowledge.
2. Mini Grammar Review (15 minutes)
We review three key verbs:
Ser (Soy estudiante. Soy deportista.)
Tener (Tengo 15 años. Tengo un perro.)
Gustar (Me gusta el fútbol. Me gustan los videojuegos.)
Students practice by translating short sentences and creating their own examples.
3. Interactive Speaking Activity (20 minutes)
Students participate in a structured activity where they ask classmates questions such as:
¿Te gusta el fútbol?
¿Tienes hermanos?
¿Eres deportista?
This reinforces question formation, listening comprehension, and real-time speaking.
4. Writing & Presentation (10 minutes)
Students write a short paragraph introducing themselves in Spanish using the target verbs. They then present it aloud to practice pronunciation and fluency.
5. Review & Wrap-Up (5 minutes)
We finish with a quick oral review where I say phrases in English and students respond in Spanish to reinforce retention.
This lesson balances grammar, conversation, writing, and interactive activities to keep students engaged while building a strong foundation in Spanish communication skills.
