About Benjamin

Hello! My name is Benji and I'm a finalist at the University of Cambridge. I have always loved teaching, particularly those who may feel like ancient languages or Classics is not for them. I want to debunk the myth that you would need to have started Latin and Greek at an early age in order to pursue it, and persuade you that all the bizarre and beautiful excitement of the classical world is waiting to be discovered.

About the lesson

My philosophy of teaching classical languages centres around the metaphor of the mountain: to get to base-camp, there is a fair bit of grammar-drudgery to get through and necessary vocab lists to memorise. But when you eventually get to the top, the view of Latin and Greek literature is breathtaking.

Therefore, I place strong emphasis on getting students to read 'real' Latin and Greek language examples taken from literature as early as possible - it brings a sense of satisfaction in the earliest stages. Also, uniquely, I like to introduce spoken elements particularly in Latin for A Level students - I have found that real usage is the fastest way to internalise the grammar. Similarly, prose composition is an excellent way to get students to think in terms of Latin and not in terms of English.

I also teach beginners-intermediate - I own and have taught all 5 books of the Cambridge Latin Course.

I took Latin and Greek for A Level and taught GCSE in both whilst completing them, and won the W. H. D. Rouse Prize in Greek in my final year of school. I received the highest mark in both Latin and Greek A Level in my cohort.

In my first year of university, I taught Latin A Level to sixth-form students to a level as required by the University.

Lesson time usually consists of 1 hour, regardless of whether the emphasis is on language or the literature elements.
