About Orlando
I am a current PhD candidate at the University of Exeter’s Centre for Medical Mycology. Here, I am researching the impact of microbes and parasites on the epithelium of the gut, and the immune system. As part of my career ambition, I’d love to be a professor in the future and am taking this first step into teaching. I have a teaching qualification (Learning and Teaching in Higher Education, gained 2024) which has set up a strong basis for tutoring and mentoring. I am also a career mentor for undergraduates at my previous university. I did an undergraduate degree in Biomedical Sciences in London, followed by two years working in industry before completing an MRes in Medical Mycology and Fungal Immunology.

I take a very hands-on approach with my students and work to figure out the gaps in their knowledge, help close that gap and ensure that my students are well-prepared for their exams.
My lessons are aimed at any student up to and including A-Levels, and as I have experienced those exams, worked through my undergraduate degree, and am now undertaking a PhD, I am well-equipped to know the field of biology in depth.
The first lesson will be free of charge, listening to the students’ concerns and working through some example questions from their exam boards to get a better understanding of where they struggle. I’ll also focus on building a safe and trusting environment during this lesson, because tutoring can be quite daunting and I want my students to be as comfortable as possible.
In the future, I would love to be a researching lecturer in life sciences. Becoming a tutor is also great experience for that teaching ambition.
