About Lusanda

I am a University of Cape Town Commerce graduate, before graduating I served the MAM department for 4 years tutoring MAM1010 and MAM1012. I am an easy-going person, this does not mean that I don't push my students, it just means that I don't get angry or upset at someone who has a different learning pace than me or their peers. I believe that we are all different and our brains have different aptitudes, it's all about understanding where an individual's strengths lie and using those strengths to create a teaching strategy that works for that specific person. I've had the luck and fortune to come across people who have applied this same teaching strategy to me and I wish to pass it forward so that bright individuals don't lose their shine.

About the lesson

I don't think I have a singular teaching method, as I believe teaching is only effective if the person you're teaching actually understands. When tutoring, I actively engage with students to figure out which method of teaching suits them best and that becomes my teaching methodology for that particular person. I try to make examples relatable to everyday life scenarios that the student might be able to get a better grasp of. At the beginning of each session, I ask students to show me the topic they are working on so that I have an understanding of the basics they need to know. I will then go over the basics as I believe a solid foundation is paramount. From that point, I will ask the student what they are specifically struggling with, so I know where to focus my attention. In my classroom, it is okay to be confused or not to understand as that is the purpose of tutoring, to help students reach a better place of understanding. I only expect that my students be honest with me when they don't understand as I cannot do an effective job if I am unwittingly leaving them in the dark regarding certain topics and sections.
