About Sophie
Hello! My name is Sophie and I graduated UCLA Summa Cum Laude this past Spring, with a major in Biology and minor in Global Health. Learning and sharing have played pivotal roles in my life. I developed a love for teaching in college, and as a result sought various opportunities to involve myself in the community. As a private tutor and small group facilitator in the Life Sciences, I had the opportunity to guide students through difficult concepts and help them gain confidence in their academic abilities. I enjoy teaching, because it allows me to challenge students to reach their goals.
Before entering college, I tutored middle school and high school students in math and science for 3 years. I helped one of my students who was struggling in Pre-Calculus raise her test scores and ultimately earn an A in the class. While Math was one of her least favorite subjects, we talked through difficult concepts and found an approach that was effective for her. At UCLA, I worked with the Academic Advancement Program as a Peer Learning Facilitator (PLF) for 2 Life Sciences Courses. As a PLF, I led small group discussions and guided students to develop strong study habits that would carry them through future classes.

I am passionate about teaching and am motivated to empower students to reach their full potential. My teaching philosophy is to give students the tools and knowledge to work through problems and develop a deep understanding for concepts. Thus, I designed worksheets that challenged students to think critically about course material. I strongly value understanding over memorization, so I try to explain concepts with their participation and input, while bringing up the significance of what we learn in class so that they realize why we are learning it.
