About Gurjas
Hi, I’m Gurjas! I’m currently studying Mathematics with Mathematical Physics at UCL. Maths is often seen as a difficult subject, and many students struggle with confidence when approaching it. One of the things I enjoy most about tutoring is helping students build that confidence and seeing the satisfaction that comes when concepts start to click.
As a tutor, I aim to make maths feel more approachable and logical. I focus on helping students understand the reasoning behind methods rather than just memorising them. My goal is to help students improve not only their ability in maths but also their confidence in tackling challenging problems independently.

I begin by identifying what my tutee needs to work on and understanding their goals. At the start of a session, I like to include a short 5-minute starter related to the topic we’re covering. This helps assess the student’s current understanding and quickly highlights which areas may need more attention.
When teaching a topic, I break complex ideas down into smaller, progressive chunks. We first work through an example question together so I can explain the reasoning and approach clearly. I then give the student a similar problem to attempt independently, allowing them to apply what they’ve just learnt and build confidence.
As the lesson progresses, we gradually work towards longer, exam-style questions to help students practise applying concepts in a more realistic setting. I also regularly revisit topics in later sessions to encourage active recall and reinforce understanding.
Overall, my aim is to create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, developing their problem-solving skills, and steadily improving both their confidence and performance in maths.
