About Hody
I am currently a Mathematics PhD student at UBC, with my undergraduate studies completed in Hong Kong. I have been teaching mathematics since 2017 and have experience working with students from a variety of academic backgrounds and levels.
Over the years, I have taught high school mathematics under international curricula, including IGCSE and International A-Level (IAL), with particular experience in Pre-Calculus and Calculus. I also teach Linear Algebra and university-level mathematics. This experience has helped me understand the common difficulties students face when moving from computational mathematics to more conceptual and abstract topics.
I enjoy helping students build confidence in mathematics by breaking difficult ideas into manageable steps and explaining the reasoning behind each method. I try to create a comfortable environment where students feel free to ask questions, make mistakes, and develop their own problem-solving skills.
Having studied mathematics in both Hong Kong and Canada, I am familiar with different styles of mathematics education and can adapt my teaching to students with different backgrounds and goals.
Outside of mathematics, I enjoy playing video games in my free time. I find that having interests outside academics also helps me connect naturally with students and keep lessons relaxed and approachable.

My approach is focused on helping students understand the ideas behind the mathematics, not just memorize procedures. I first identify where the difficulty is coming from—whether it is a missing prerequisite, a conceptual misunderstanding, or difficulty translating theory into problem-solving steps. From there, I explain the material clearly, work through carefully chosen examples, and gradually let the student take more control of the solution process.
A typical lesson begins with a short review of the student's current topic, assignment, or upcoming exam. We then identify the main concepts and work through representative problems together. I emphasize how to recognize which method to use, how to organize a solution efficiently, and how to check whether an answer makes sense. When useful, I also connect computational techniques to the underlying theory so that students can handle unfamiliar problems rather than relying only on memorized templates.
As a Mathematics PhD student at UBC, I am comfortable teaching both computational and proof-based mathematics. I can adjust the level and style of explanation depending on the student's background and goals, from strengthening foundational skills to working through more advanced university mathematics. My goal is to make difficult ideas precise, intuitive, and manageable.
My lessons are suitable for university and college students, as well as high school students following the BC curriculum. I can help with undergraduate courses such as calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, introductory proofs, and related mathematics subjects. I can also teach BC high school mathematics, including Foundations of Mathematics, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus.
I am especially well suited to students at UBC, SFU, KPU, and other colleges or universities who want help understanding course material, preparing for midterms or finals, improving problem-solving skills, or building a stronger mathematical foundation. For high school students, I can also help with course preparation, exam review, and preparation for the transition to university-level mathematics.
