About Carlos

I have tutored for about 6 years and I did a lot of tutoring in that time (I tutored privately/freelance as well as for Kip Mcgraph and TeachMe2 (where I have a 5 star 100% wow factor rating as can be seen in the following link: (concealed information) ) both at students' homes and online. I can email some of the recordings of my past tutoring sessions upon request). The many students (over a dozen) I have tutored have all expressed their enthusiastic approval of my tutoring and are willing to act as references (that is to say, that if you request it I will give you their phone numbers for you to hear their approval directly)

I have distinctions in university first year pure Mathematics and university first year Statistics. I am currently waiting to accrue sufficient funds to continue my studies without financial issues (that is why I am available at any time).

I am very patient, friendly and flexible; (available any day and any time for online and in person tutoring (in the case of the latter, I can tutor at the student's location, my location or some other location [for example, a public library], just so long as the location is within reasonable distance)

There are certain features that area always present in my tutoring regardless of the student even though my methodology is customized based on the particular student.

One of these is that I avoid simply being a repeat of the school's lessons. While I cover the standard things as well, I make sure to give different perspectives on concepts and to teach extra concepts and techniques that are not typically taught at schools and yet would be helpful to a student.

Another is that I always heavily emphasize that a student take his/her time when answering questions I ask of them. Something bad I see happening with nearly all teachers/tutors is that when the student is asked a question they nearly always feel the need to answer nearly immediately. This is no good as Math takes thought and thought takes time. Even if after a long time thinking the student's answer is simply "I don't know", that is still an improvement as the student has engaged with the session and the student has given the matter some thought (thinking is healthy). I suspect the reason students with other teachers/tutors feel the need to answer immediately is that they find long pauses when talking to be awkward. I heavily emphasise that there is no awkwardness with us and that they should as much time as they need before replying.

As for customizing based on a particular student:

First I obtain information. I ask the student what the student's goals are and what his current level of understanding is. I also ask about the student's personality, tendencies and current situation.

Then I choose a tutoring method based on the above.

For example, if the student is diligent pupil that I can rely on to do practice accordingly then I can save session time by foregoing checking, allocation etc. of homework in favor of taking full advantage of the unique benefits of one on one tutoring (for example, being able to have dialogue with the students determining his specific concerns and questions and proceeding with explanation from myself and questions from the student until the concerns and questions have been addressed). On the other hand, if the student needs an external push I will allocate homework, check for it's completion, etc.

My methodology will also vary based on student feedback. For example if a student is mostly concerned about short term test improvements then I might forego deeper understanding and different ways of seeing things in favor of reinforcing the typical methods and algorithmic techniques that will serve this goal. On the other hand if the student is fascinated with a particular topic and is concerned with mathematical enrichment then I might delve more deeply into the topics providing different ways of seeing things and deeper understanding.

The methodology might also changed based on assessments such as tests and assignments.

In summary:

First I gather info.
Then I choose a methodology based on this info.
After some time has passed the student and I reflect and assess on the student's situation and growth.
Then I modify the methodology if appropriate.

In other words the methodology changes according to information and the current situation.

It bears mentioning that I will usually provide a session report.
