About Alyssa

Pursuing undergraduate law degree at King’s College London. International student with 3-year student visa, allowing me to work up to 20 hours a week. 9A*s achieved in GCSEs (Coordinated Science (double award), Mathematics, Literature in English, English language (with grade ONE in oral endorsement), Economics, Mandarin Chinese, Malay as a Foreign Language, and Psychology) A*AA achieved in A levels (Literature in English, Mathematics, Economics, respectively) I have experience tutoring mathematics for 2 years, as well as personal experience tutoring my three younger siblings in math and English. I love helping students reach their full potential and I believe that my experience in schooling gives me more experience than a non-student tutor.

About the lesson

During my A levels, I held the apprenticeship position of a mathematics tutor where I assisted year 7s and 8s during their lessons part-time. I was qualified due to having achieved 9 A*s in my GCSEs, whilst also taking mathematics in A levels. I also had prior experience tutoring my three younger siblings, so I am very familiar with working with children and taking many creative approaches to ensure they understand the concepts of what I am teaching them.

I would start the lesson by introducing and explaining the mathematic concept of the day (e.g algebraic simplification) and ask simple, general questions for students to answer in a broad and contributive fashion, in order to engage them with the current topic and allow them to absorb more by participating. I would also demonstrate a few questions to show them to process of answering them. Then, I would set practice questions for the students to do on their own and interact with them one by one, checking their progress and answering any questions. I also encourage them to discuss amongst one another before asking me for help, in order to learn from their peers. At the end of the lesson, I would go through the answers to the practice questions and discuss how to arrive at each answer and finalise any remaining doubts.
