About Paul

Are you struggling to understand philosophy lectures, prepare for exams, or write a stronger philosophy paper? I help students make difficult philosophical ideas clear, manageable, and engaging.

I hold an M.A. in Philosophy and bring decades of study in the history of Western philosophy, from the pre-Socratics and Plato to Kant, Hegel, Nietzsche, and Sartre. Whether you're taking your first philosophy course or tackling more advanced material, I can help you understand complex arguments, connect important ideas, and express your own thinking clearly and confidently.

How I can help you

Introduction to Philosophy: Understand major philosophical questions, key thinkers, and foundational arguments.
Ethics and Moral Philosophy: Explore ethical theories and learn to analyze and evaluate moral arguments.
Formal Logic: Develop your understanding of logical structure, validity, and sound reasoning.
Critical Thinking: Learn to identify assumptions, assess arguments, and construct clear, well-supported conclusions.
Philosophy Essays and Exam Preparation: Organize your ideas, develop a strong thesis, explain philosophical arguments accurately, and prepare more effectively for assessments.
My approach

Philosophy becomes much more manageable when you learn to break complex arguments into clear steps and see how the ideas fit together. I focus on helping you understand the material rather than simply memorize it, so you can explain concepts in your own words, think independently, and develop stronger arguments of your own.

Whether you're confused by a difficult reading, struggling to organize an essay, or looking for a deeper understanding of a philosopher's ideas, our lessons will focus on your specific questions, coursework, and goals.

My aim is to help you approach philosophy with greater clarity, confidence, and intellectual independence.

Philosophy can be challenging. Difficult texts, abstract concepts, and complex arguments can make it hard to know where to begin. My goal is to make philosophy clear and approachable while helping you succeed in your course.

Lessons tailored to your needs and your course

We'll work through difficult philosophical texts and arguments step by step, clarify confusing concepts, and practice expressing ideas clearly. Whether you're preparing for an exam or developing a philosophy essay, my goal is to help you understand the material and become a more confident, independent thinker.

If you're struggling to understand a difficult reading, we'll work through the material step by step. I'll help you identify the central ideas, follow the reasoning, and understand how the arguments fit together.

Areas I can help you with

Introduction to Philosophy: Understand foundational questions, concepts, and arguments.

Ethics: Explore moral theories and learn to analyze ethical arguments.

Logic and Critical Thinking: Identify logical structures, evaluate reasoning, and construct stronger arguments.

History of Western Philosophy: Trace the development of philosophical ideas from ancient Greece through modern and contemporary philosophy.

Major Philosophers: Study Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Locke, Hume, Kant, Hegel, Nietzsche, Sartre, and others.

Philosophy of Religion: Examine philosophical arguments about God, faith, reason, and religious belief.

Philosophy Essay Writing: Develop a clear thesis, organize your argument, address objections, and revise your work for clarity and precision.

Reading Difficult Philosophical Texts: Break down challenging passages, clarify unfamiliar concepts, and identify an author's central argument.

Learn to think philosophically

My approach goes beyond memorizing theories or learning what a philosopher believed. I help students understand how philosophical arguments work, why philosophers disagree, how objections challenge an argument, and how ideas develop across the history of philosophy.

The aim is not simply to get through an assignment or prepare for an exam. It's to develop the skills to read carefully, reason critically, write clearly, and approach challenging philosophical questions with greater confidence.

Whether you're new to philosophy or studying more advanced material, lessons will focus on your questions, your coursework, and the skills you need to make progress.
