About William
Humanities PhD; specialist in English (language, literacy and literature); familiar with UK Key Stages 2 through to 5 including SATs, GCSE and A-level, and also iGCSE and IB; experienced at teaching in class, one-to-one and on-line; GCSE examiner; over twenty years in the Education Sector.
I am a dedicated, diligent teacher, able to communicate with young people of diverse ability and background. I have successfully tutored pupils for some of the most sought-after schools in the country. I have also worked in some of London’s more challenging academies, supported young people outside mainstream education, and taught on-line across the globe.
English is my key focus. Without this subject, pupils cannot access other areas of the curriculum and may struggle to enter employment. I also teach Social Science or Sociology (GCSE, A-Level and Undergraduate), History and Religious Studies (GCSE).
I have worked as a researcher in universities, in the commercial sector, and in Westminster, but now I am a full-time tutor. Check out the 'Packs' below to see the best booking deals for online lessons

People often ask me what I intend to do - honestly, I won’t know exactly until I have met the pupil and formulated some idea of what the ‘problem’ is. From here on, there are numerous tricks of the trade, but nothing works for everyone, and the point of tutoring is personalisation. Children also get bored quickly, of course, and we sometimes find that what worked wonders on Monday has lost its fizz by Friday. While I have plenty of favourite techniques, I try not to stay in my own comfort zone all of the time. Really though, what I do is not the most important thing: too many teachers and tutors focus on themselves when a more child-centred approach is called for; our most successful learners are the ones who take the most ownership of their learning process.

Perfect! Excellent English tuition for our son's 13+ admissions
We approached William following a review of English tutors on this site and were immediately delighted by his friendly tone and extensive experience when he turned up for a sample lesson.
Our son had had a previous English tutor for 11+ pre-test admissions, who had a less sympathetic attitude and demeanour. This resulted in no discernible improvement in our son's performance.
William arrived on the scene and it was an immediate hit. He seemed at once to put our son at ease with his helpful and practical tuition. He had lots of past papers to go through and always stayed chatting to our son well past his hour slot, which we found to be so refreshing as compared to clock-watchers.
Even before the first lockdown, we knew that William had very strong online tuition experience and so the switch to virtual lessons (we never went back to physical lessons) was very straightforward and equally (if not more) productive for our son. We never had a situation of "do I have to have a lesson with William today?" (which was often felt with the previous tutor) and I think our son derived both academic benefits, but also personal benefits in just being able to talk to someone about exams/interviews etc. that wasn't a teacher or family member.
We would have no hesitation recommending William and will be contacting William again for our younger son as he approaches Years 6/7.
Our son's English improved dramatically over the period of William's tuition and this was also reflected in the feedback from his school teachers. Ultimately, our son get a place at the school of his choice.
Subject : School Entrance Exams

Subject : English
Outcome : Wait until the resultPerfect! A very thoughtfull, reliable and effective tutor
I can unhesitatingly recommend William as an excellent English tutor. He is a very thoughtful and highly reliable teacher. He always arrived on time and with a lesson plan prepared. My son is very much a STEM focused child and his previous schools English teacher did not seem to be reaching him and had written him off for English, in the process seriously denting his confidence. William was able to bond with my son and patiently helped him with his reading comprehension and essay writing. He had helped to build up my sons confidence and ability sufficiently to help get into his preferred very competitive London day school through good results in competitive exams. We were told that our son was in the top quartile of test takers in the English part of the entrance exam which very much surprised me as we were only aiming to be average. The success in English was clearly greatly helped by Williams input.

Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the tutor.
William is incredibly helpful as well as knowledgeable. He has helped my son to achieve two nines in his GSCE exams even though English wasn’t his strongest subject. His lessons are engaging and well structured. I can highly recommend him.
William has been a dedicated tutor for my son for two and a half years. Initially, William helped him with GCSE English Language and then continued tutoring him to improve his language skills through his A Level Sociology. My son is now headed to his first choice Uni to study Law - we are thrilled. We would highly recommend William for any student seeking to improve their language skills.
I would throughly recommend William. He helped prepare our son for his GCSEs in English and Literature this year. My son was predicted 4s before working with William (which began only a few months prior to the exams starting) but went on to achieve a 5 and 7 in his GCSES. William was gentle but direct, easy to understand and always had a great plan and resources for each session. William will be continuing to work with our son into sixth form, to continue to improve his literacy in extended essay questions at A Level.
Worked really hard to help my son achieve his grades and helped him became a hard worker. Helped him achieve a grade 8 and 7 in English language and literature.
He is a very good tutor, who has helped my sons for the past 2 years (year 10-11). And they just received their GCSE results with high results. I recommend William as a tutor as he helped them gained this result.
William has been an amazing tutor to both my children aged 7 and 11 years old he is friendly and professional really encourages the children to engage and has made learning fun and enjoyable he is patient, polite and would highly recommend him
William worked with my daughter who had lost all confidence in her abilities in English language and Literature, after her school reported that she had dropped from level 8 grades in English previously to level 3 at the end of year 9. William is very patient and has gentle coaching style to tutoring that was very effective.
He would work longer than the assigned time at no extra costs, ensuring that my daughter understood the concepts that he was teaching. Following 4 months of tutoring, my daughter to achieved 8/9 in her Spring and then the same grades again for year 10 Summer mocks. I would definitely recommend William as an effective tutor. I would like to thank William for his commitment, dedication and ability to tap into my daughter's hidden potential and help her reach above her low school expectations.William taught my teenage son for around 5 months and helped him to achieve good passes for both GCSE English language and literature. My son has always struggled with English and had failed a first attempt at the exams. William was thorough and patient and provided my son with the necessary tools and guidance to achieve good passes in both exams. William has a very calm manner and was able to develop a good working relationship with my son while keeping him motivated. William is also extremely knowledgeable about the AQA board exam requirements for both Language and Literature. I would certainly recommend William.

It is a pleasure to write this and highly recommend William as an English Tutor.
William saw my son for English Literature (and some Language bits too) for six months leading up to GCSE's. It was by far the most challenging subject for my son and he was struggling to find anyway to engage with it. Along came William and turned that arround. He is friendly and extremly professional while also having the ability to relate to teenagers and exam pressure. William has a deep understanding of these subjects and how GCSE students can have difiiculties grasping the books studied at this level.
My son's confidence increased with each session and he even starting enjoying Shakespeare! We were told not to apply for my son’s secondary school as he was not at the required level. We applied to three different schools including his current one. William started to tutor David at the beginning of October 18 and within 3 months brought my son from the deep end to the top of the class. He has now been accepted to all three schools.
The headmaster said” David did not just do well, he did extremely well! He was one of the top ones”
We have therefore decided to continue sessions on a weekly basis.
I would highly recommend William as he has greatly helped my son in such a short time, in addition to my son actually enjoying the sessions! Our daughter has had a number of tutors over the last few years and to be honest they never lasted more than 2 lessons. William did and he took our daughter from not liking English and not getting good grades to an 8 in English Lit and a 7 in English Language which her teacher has asked for it to be remarked. Her achievements are a result of William’s teaching. I used to listen to his lessons and he would take her answer which may have not be right into the right answer by making a few changes to her thought process.
Im got a B at results day and am very pleased hes helped my daughter alot .

I would highly recommend William as a English literature and language tutor . He would give more than 100% of his time and effort for the lessons . He never looked at the time even after the lesson time was over till he would complete what he started .
William tutored my twin boys for English Language and Literature - GCSE's. He was punctual , reliable and full of enthusiasm , encouragement and positivity . He gave my boys great confidence and prepared them very well for their exams. We would have no hesitation in recommending William as a tutor. William will carry on with us for 'A Level' tutoring.
William helped my son, currently at the French Lycée, get a place in year 9 at Kings College Wimbledon next september. He helped him prepare for the english part of the school exam (after which he got a conditional offer) and subsequently for the 13+ English.
In addition to developing a strong bond with my son, he gave him very good advice in terms of what to focus on as well as very good tips and techniques, especially for the Reading & comprehension. He was extremely patient, reliable, flexible and dedicated. It is very clear that he has a lot of experience in terms of tutoring for common entrance English exams and he was able to bring lots of relevant materials. He understood very quickly what my son's strengths and weaknesses were and came up with a plan to get him to the right level in a very short time. Overall a very competent and conscientious tutor!William tutored my niece after our last tutor left halfway through my niece's GCSE english studies. She has had several tutor's as english GCSE was one of her weaker subjects and found that william was the best tutor she has had.
William is a natural teacher who is a great communicator, who has a great ability to explain the subject material in a way that is easy and interesting to understand. William was also very likeable and personable.
My niece passed her english exam and I believe that william's help was a big reason she did so, and I have no hesitation at all in recommending him as a tutor for your child.William guided a 15 year old girl and 16 year old boy through the complexities of RE and History GCSE in an engaging and committed way. His 'discussion-style' of tutoring broke down many of the learning barriers that had been put in place by school teachers. He paid particular attention to teaching 'definitions' which helped to clarify many aspects of the subjects.
Both my son and my sister were William's student. My sister was doing Foundation Course in Fashion Styling and Photography at London College of Fashion. As an international student, she found it hard when it comes to presentation her assignment. William helped her through in every step from researching, writing and preparing for her presentation speech.
My son was doing GCSE during the toughest time of his life, his dad passed away when he started year10. In result of that he missed out 3/4 of his year10 GCSE subjects. Trying to achieve any pass grade had become a huge challenge. I was very impressed with William's methods of teaching and his dedication. It had improved both of his student's abilities significantly.View more recommendations
