About Ashish
Bio: ASHISH DHA is a performer-composer, raagdari musician, sound designer and spoken-word artiste. His specialty is cross-genre experimental music, often based on Hindustani raags, but drawing on influences ranging from Aerosmith and Avril Lavigne to AR Rehman and Wasifuddin Dagar. His latest passion is 'musical meditation' - meditative, through-composed pieces on hammered dulcimer, piano, voice and bansuri. He also plays with his new ensemble, 'Ashish Dha & Friends' - an international musical collaboration, with whom he has performed live and on radio. Ashish has given many concerts of his original experimental music, 'Hindustani 2.0', as well as lecture-demonstrations and workshops, in music, sound, spoken word and acoustics. Performances in Europe include the recent 'India Day' celebrations in Dublin, and 'Ashish Dha en Marseille' - a two-week mini festival of Hindustani raag music and naad yog in France. Earlier, he performed and gave workshops extensively in India, including the 'Indian Music Intonation Workshop' at IHC, New Delhi. His formal training has been in Hindustani classical singing, both khayal and dhrupad fundamentals. After freelancing in India for some years and getting an MFA degree in Sound Design from CalArts, USA, he is now based in Delhi and Dublin, Ireland, where he seeks creative collaborations and students through his sound studio cum music learning and performance center, Naadaalay. _____________ I look forward to welcoming you into the Naadaalay family! Do get in touch even if just for a chat to explore possibilities.

I have a highly personalized approach, geared towards helping you reach your specific personal goals. My teaching methods range from the traditional guru-shishya call-and-response, to the cutting edge of digital music technology, and everything in between. I have studied Hindustani raagdari music for many years in India, including under world-renowned dhrupad exponent Ustad F. Wasifuddin Dagar. I teach both khayal and Dagarvani dhrupad gayaki (vocal styles). My experience teaching a number of different instruments also brings a richness and variety - I teach singing, harmonium, tabla, bansuri, guitar and piano. I can also teach you raag improvisation on your own instrument, whatever that may be. Lessons range from half to one hour each, and can be as frequent or as sporadic as you want. Complete beginners are especially welcome, but I cater to up to the intermediate level for Indian classical.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the tutor.
Ashish is a true devotee to the art of learning, creating and teaching. This makes his teaching style far-reaching, thorough and encouraging. I've learned so much in a variety of topics from him that I don't think I'd otherwise be able to grasp. I highly recommend Ashish as a teacher who can guide you through learning with clarity and ease.
Ashish takes time to understand your requirement from the very start and tailors his each class to meet your need on your musical journey. I loved his classes.
Ashish San is a friend, philosopher and guide. His enthusiasm is contagious. His presence (online) is captivating. His talent is evident and his knowledge of the subject matter is deep. He teaches me 1 thing, and the way he teaches, I learn 10 more things from that. I share a spiritual bond with him that transcends human bondage. A relationship with him is something to cherish over life. He takes classical knowledge and presents it in a modern format which makes the subject matter relevant in cross-disciplines. He is patient, kind and funny, so the limited time I spend with him is not only valuable but also joyful. More power to him.
Ashish is both my brother as well as a tutor for me. He is an outstanding tutor for the simple reason that he begins teaching exactly from where the student is.
Ashish does not carry any preconceived notions of what a student 'should' know. Instead, he explores exactly what the student does know and then begins teaching from there.
Another and even more important thing is that he does not insist on the student being an ideal student. Whatever qualities you have, Ashish works with those. No if-you-dont-practice-for-4-hours-a-day-I'm-not-going-to-teach-you. Un huh. If you want to learn during lessons and not do any practice that's fine. Ashish will just go slowly. Work with what is, that's his moto.
The reason I feel that Ashish works this way, is that he has an unbound love for learning, coupled with a intrinsic disrespect for Authority with a capital A. That's why he never holds or presents himself as a Authority and yet manages to capture the imagination and interest of his students. As his student one comes away from his lessons with a feeling of having had fun. It's only in looking back that one realises how much one learnt as well. And this attitude crosses subjects. I've found learning medieval history from him, for example, as much fun as learning the harmonic series!
In short, if you would like to enjoy the process of learning as well as the outcome, I highly recommend you learn 'with' Ashish.
Cheers.View more recommendations
