About John
A former tutor at the Museum of Cartoon Art, and currently teaching at the London Art College, John originally trained at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin and at Bolton Street College of Print Technology also in his native city. Having forged his own career by doing several different jobs within the creative arts field, John is passionate about helping artists of all kinds make an effective living from their skills in addition to developing the skills themselves. However, he is equally committed to the need for freelance workers and especially artists to have a healthy work/life balance overall, so students who want to study cartooning just for fun are heartily welcome too!

I have been a professional cartoonist and art teacher for over 30 years. In that time I have taught many others to draw ranging from people who believed they 'couldn't draw a straight line' to artists who now work for the national press in their own right.
I have taught at primary, secondary and adult levels, including 3 years as an SEND teacher and my lessons are personal, fun and designed to get you drawing and creating content as soon as possible.
My own cartoons and comic strips have appeared in a wide range of publications ranging from Private Eye, The Guardian and The Stage to The Bookseller, Christian Herald and Media Week. I have been a live cartoonist on stage, on Nickelodeon, Channel 5 and BBC and my HarperCollins book 'Learn To Draw Cartoons' is in its 10th edition. Whether you or your child's ambition is to get published, get confident for your art GCSES or A-Levels or simply to have fun, we can tailor the lessons to achieve just that!
