About Hiram Ian John

I’m an experienced English educator with over 11 years of experience in ESL teaching, training, and academic instruction.

I am a Certified TESOL and TEYL teacher, with professional experience as a college instructor, ESL tutor, trainer, and lesson evaluator. As a TEYL-certified educator, I am equipped with effective, age-appropriate methodologies for teaching children and young learners, with a strong focus on patience, flexibility, engagement, and meaningful communication.

My areas of specialization include public speaking, practical English, adult English, and business English. My background in communication extends beyond the classroom. I have participated in numerous local and national debate competitions and have received recognition in debate and public speaking from universities and local government institutions. These experiences have strengthened my ability to communicate clearly, think critically, and help learners develop confidence in expressing themselves.

Beyond teaching, I’m passionate about travel, photography, and cultural exploration. I enjoy traveling by motorcycle, meeting local people, learning about different cultures and languages, and discovering the unique stories and perspectives that make every community different. These experiences have also enriched my approach to teaching by helping me appreciate the importance of cultural awareness and authentic communication.

I believe that every learner can make meaningful progress with the right guidance, consistent practice, and genuine encouragement. As a teacher, my goal is not only to help students improve their English, but also to help them become more confident, independent, and comfortable using the language in real-life situations.

About the lesson

My teaching approach is primarily student-centered and communication-focused. I design and create learning materials based on each student’s interests, level, learning needs, and goals, allowing lessons to feel relevant, engaging, and purposeful rather than purely textbook-driven.

I integrate grammar and pronunciation correction naturally into the lesson through immediate feedback when appropriate, as well as targeted post-lesson feedback. By keeping the lesson conversational, I give students more opportunities to speak, express their ideas, build confidence, and use English in meaningful contexts. My goal is not simply to correct mistakes, but to help students understand and apply the language more accurately and confidently.

For children and young learners, I adapt my approach using the PPP method—Presentation, Practice, and Production, or what I often describe as “I do, We do, You do.” This provides clear modeling, guided practice, and gradual scaffolding before encouraging students to produce the language independently. I also incorporate appropriate drills, repetition, visuals, and engaging activities to reinforce new vocabulary and sentence patterns while keeping young learners actively involved.

Ultimately, I aim to create lessons where students speak more, participate actively, and leave the class feeling more confident and capable of using English.
