I am a Computer Programming tutor with 8 years of experience and an MSc in Computer Science. About the lesson

My programming teaching for technical interview preparation is built around the genuine demands of competitive software engineering interviews at leading technology companies, and I structure preparation around the actual interview format rather than around general programming instruction. My approach to algorithm teaching for interviews uses pattern recognition as the primary framework — students learn to identify which of the approximately twenty algorithm patterns a given problem belongs to before selecting the appropriate algorithmic technique, because this categorisation skill is more efficient and reliable than trying to invent solutions from scratch under time pressure. I require students to explain their thinking aloud throughout every coding session because the verbal communication of technical reasoning is assessed directly in most technical interviews and is the component candidates most consistently underprepare. Big-O analysis is practised on every solution, including both time and space complexity, because interviewers routinely ask for this analysis and students who cannot provide it quickly and accurately from habit consistently underperform relative to their coding ability. I run timed mock interviews using problems from the student's target difficulty level, followed by detailed debrief sessions covering both technical and communication performance, because exam and interview performance under time pressure is a distinct skill that only develops through specific practice. My teaching goal is a candidate who performs at their genuine best in a technical interview setting.
