About Kathleen

I taught French professionally for decades before retiring from full-time classroom work, and across twenty years total I have now guided approximately nine hundred students using methods that have never once let me down. My training was rigorous and traditional, and I have deliberately never chased newer trends or app-based gimmicks that I frankly do not believe actually work as well as claimed. I am not the right teacher for students wanting something casual or entertainment-focused, and I say that plainly upfront so expectations are correctly set from our very first meeting together. I am, however, exactly the right teacher for serious students genuinely willing to commit consistent, disciplined effort toward real, lasting language proficiency over real time. My former students have gone on to strong exam results, university admissions, and successful careers requiring genuine French competency, built through discipline rather than shortcuts of any kind whatsoever. I maintain high standards because decades of experience have shown me they genuinely work, not out of unnecessary harshness for its own sake at all. Parents and adult students consistently tell me my traditional, structured approach produced results no trendy alternative ever managed to achieve for them previously elsewhere. After twenty years, I remain entirely unapologetic about expecting real, consistent effort from every single student.

About the lesson

I do not believe in gimmicks, apps, or gamified shortcuts, and I tell every new student that plainly before we begin working together properly on real French. Grammar is taught systematically from the very beginning, building a genuine structural foundation before conversation is allowed to run ahead of actual understanding. Vocabulary is learned through proper repetition and genuine writing practice, not flashcards alone, because I have watched decades of students forget flashcard vocabulary within weeks without real reinforcement. I assign consistent written homework every single lesson, and I expect it completed properly, because language ability is built through consistent effort, not occasional enthusiasm alone. Reading aloud remains a core part of every lesson, since I have found nothing else builds pronunciation and confidence quite as reliably over genuine time. I correct every error I hear, immediately and clearly, because I believe students deserve honest feedback rather than false encouragement that leaves real gaps unaddressed for years. Speaking practice is structured, not free-form chat, building specific skills deliberately in careful sequence rather than random, unfocused conversation. I hold every student, regardless of age or background, to the same consistent standard of preparation and genuine effort throughout. After decades of teaching, I remain entirely convinced that traditional, disciplined methods simply work, and I see no reason to change that now.
