Find out more about Poonam

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My fascination with accounting and mathematics began in school. It was like a puzzle box clicking open in my mind, and I was hooked. The "why" behind the "what" became incredibly compelling. As for tutoring, it grew organically from my love of sharing that "aha!" moment with others. I started by helping classmates who were struggling, and I discovered the immense satisfaction of seeing someone's eyes light up when they finally grasp a concept. That feeling, coupled with the personalized connection you build with a student, is what drew me to private tutoring.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach Accounting, Mathematics, English, Business and Economics. These subjects allow for deep exploration and critical thinking, which I find incredibly rewarding to guide students through. I'm also passionate about showing students the real-world applications, making it relevant and engaging. While I enjoy teaching all aspects of the subject, if I had to choose, I'm perhaps less fond of naths, rote memorization of formulas, which I try to minimize through conceptual understanding. My focus is always on building a strong foundation, so even the less "exciting" parts are crucial.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Absolutely! My elder sister was a huge influence. She had a knack for making even the most complex ideas accessible, she showed me the power of patient explanation and genuine enthusiasm, qualities I strive to emulate in my own teaching. She instilled in me the belief that everyone can learn any subject with the right support and approach.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Beyond a strong grasp of the subject matter, I believe the most important qualities are patience, empathy, and adaptability. Every student learns differently, so a good tutor needs to be able to tailor their approach to each individual's needs and learning style. Patience is key, as some concepts take time to sink in. Empathy allows you to connect with the student and understand their struggles. Finally, adaptability means being able to adjust your teaching methods and resources as needed. A good tutor is also a good listener, creating a safe space for students to ask questions and express their concerns.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I remember struggling with trigonometry in Mathematics myself. I was convinced I would never understand it. My teacher, instead of just re-explaining the formula, sat down with me and broke it down into smaller, more manageable parts, using real-world examples. That "aha!" moment, when it finally clicked, was incredibly empowering. It taught me the importance of breaking down complex problems and the power of personalized instruction, which is something I carry with me in my tutoring today.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

One of the biggest challenges in teaching Accounting and Mathematics is often overcoming students' preconceived notions or anxieties about the subject. Many students come to me believing they're "bad at Calculations" based on past experiences. My goal is to dismantle those limiting beliefs and show them that they are capable of learning and succeeding. Another ongoing challenge is staying up-to-date with the latest developments in the field and finding new and engaging ways to present the material. Learning is a lifelong process, and I'm constantly seeking new resources and strategies to improve my teaching.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My passion lies in the intersection of Accounting and its usage in real world problems. I'm fascinated by how accounting can be used to solve real-world problems.. Sharing that excitement with my students and helping them discover their own passions within the subject is what truly drives me.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

I believe what makes me a Superprof is my genuine commitment to my students' success. I don't just teach the material; I invest in their learning journey. I take the time to understand their individual needs and tailor my approach accordingly. I'm patient, supportive, and passionate about helping them achieve their goals. Beyond that, I'm a lifelong learner myself, constantly seeking to improve my teaching skills and deepen my own understanding of subject matter. I strive to create a positive and encouraging learning environment where students feel empowered to ask questions, take risks, and grow. And, of course, I genuinely enjoy the process of learning with my students. It's a two-way street, and I learn just as much from them as they learn from me.
