About John
I am a highly experienced and dedicated teacher, currently serving as a Second in Department, with over 15 years of classroom teaching experience and 10 years of tutoring. My most recent GCSE cohort achieved results nearly one grade above their target grades, reflecting my commitment to helping students exceed expectations. I carefully limit my tutoring to two or three pupils per year, ensuring each student receives focused, personalised support.
I pride myself on creating a calm, supportive environment where students feel confident to ask questions and develop their understanding. I am particularly skilled at boosting pupils’ confidence, helping them overcome barriers and make steady progress. My lessons are suitable for both Foundation and Higher tier students, and I tailor my approach to meet each learner’s individual needs while maintaining a high level of professionalism at all times.

I offer professional, structured tutoring designed to build confidence and improve exam performance. My teaching approach is calm, supportive, and highly focused on the key concepts students need to succeed. I gradually tailor lessons to each learner, ensuring they fully understand core topics before moving on, and as students approach their GCSEs, I place increasing emphasis on practising with past papers and exam-style questions to develop technique and exam confidence.
Lessons typically last 60 minutes and can be delivered either online or in person, depending on what suits the student best. Each session is carefully planned to maximise progress while maintaining a relaxed and encouraging environment.
I bring over 15 years of classroom teaching experience and currently hold a position as Second in Department, alongside 10 years of successful tutoring experience. My lessons are suitable for secondary school students, particularly those preparing for GCSEs, whether they need support to build foundations or aim to achieve higher grades.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the tutor.
I recommend John as a maths tutor without hesitation or exception.
John is extremely knowledgeable in his subject and enabled my daughter to understand maths topics and methods that the school teachers could not. John has a vast knowledge of many different problem-solving methods and was able to run through these with Izzy until she found one she could understand and use in her exams, particularly algebraic fractions, trigonometry and functions.
John did an amazing job of gently building Izzy's confidence through relaxed sessions, yet focused, sessions. He is patient, reliable, good-humoured and prepared - all the traits needed to support a struggling teen with low self-confidence in the subject. John was able to see where Izzy needed the most support and planned lessons accordingly.
John tutored Izzy for about two years during her GCSEs. She lost a lot of learning during Covid and had hit a maths 'brick wall'. She was in Set 4 (out of 6), with no confidence, and due to sit the Foundation Paper, with an expected result of Grade 4. By the time of Izzy's actual exams, she had moved up into Set 2 and was entered for the Higher paper. Izzy achieved a very respectable Grade 6, which she was over the moon with.
With John's support and encouragement, Izzy was able to achieve her full maths potential, which is a testament to his dedication and belief in his students.I highly recommend John as a tutor. He worked with my daughter, Niamh, while she was preparing for her GCSE resit. Niamh had struggled in class for some time and often felt unable to ask for help when she didn’t understand certain topics.
John was patient, encouraging, and took the time to make sure she fully understood each area before moving on. His teaching style helped build both her knowledge and her confidence. He explained concepts clearly, provided plenty of support, and always encouraged Niamh to ask questions and believe in her abilities.
Thanks to John’s guidance and dedication, Niamh successfully passed her GCSE resit. We are incredibly grateful for the positive impact he had on her learning and confidence. I would highly recommend John to any student looking for a supportive, knowledgeable, and effective tutor.I've worked with John for 10 years now at High School, as practicing teachers. I also know him in a tutoring capacity, and he gets fantastic results with his tutees. He is realistic and very knowledgeable. John will explain concepts in many different ways for his tutees due to his vast experience and teaching abilities, both with high-end candidates and those needing a confidence boost. He has current knowledge of all exam boards and their specific requirements. John is friendly, calm, kind, and laid-back. He's humorous and has a great way with his students. John shows passion for his subject and loves a Mathematics problem to solve! I highly recommend John. He's a lovely teacher with superb credentials.
Having worked closely with John for a number of years, I can highly recommend him as an exceptional GCSE Maths tutor. He is a highly experienced and effective educator who consistently delivers outstanding results. John is incredibly popular with his students because he takes the time to truly understand their individual personalities and unique learning styles. His tailored, student-centred approach builds both confidence and subject mastery. Any student would be fortunate to have him as a tutor.
