About Luke

I am a university lecturer at Imperial College London in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. I have taught Mechanics and Design at various stages of the degree course for over 22 years and understand some of the difficulties students face in transitioning from A level subjects to degree level teaching. The engineering background I have also means I frequently use most of the techniques used at A level mathematics such as Calculus, Trigonometry, Vectors, Algebra and numerical methods. Having tutored my own children and those of family and friends in mathematics and mechanics, I have been able to gain a better understanding of different learning approaches used and be able to adapt to best suit the individual student. I have now tutored mathematics to A level for the past 4 years and am familiar with both OCR and the Edexcel syllabuses. I am always described as very approachable and understanding of students' problems, and given my practical engineering background I can normally always put the academic problem in some form of real world application which helps improve students' understanding. I have also found that this helps to better motivate and stimulate students and develop a more inquisitive mind. University : - University of Surrey - PhD Prizes and Scholarships : James Watt Medal in 2005 from the Institution of Civil Engineers for a publication.

Perfect! Wonderful tutor
We managed to get Luke to help my daughter with a retake of a module on her Civil Engineering degree during the lockdown. The lessons were well structured, informative and more importantly well taught so much so that she passed the retake with flying colours! So grateful for Luke's help.He is a great teacher and mentor.
