About Hewei

Hello! My name is Hewei, a Year 11 student studying at Westminster School with a passion for helping others. My experiences at a top UK private school and past successes in admissions into various schools (King's College Wimbledon, St Olave's) equip me with the necessary knowledge to deliver entrance-exam-specific preparation. I'm well versed in Maths Challenges, having scored Gold awards in UKMT's Junior, Intermediate and Senior Maths Challenges. In addition to helping tutees achieve their goals of getting into top schools, I emphasise a philosophy of life-long, curious learning, from which academic success naturally stems. When I'm not at school, you can find me studying the piano and double bass at the Royal College of Music. As you can probably tell, I am an ardent classical musician! I regularly act as an ambassador of music, a role which comes from the responsibility of a Music Scholar at Westminster School. Music is a strong passion of mine - I've performed at the Barbican, St John's Smith Square, Parliament, Buckingham Palace, the Cenotaph, as well as abroad as part of orchestral tours. To unwind, I enjoy playing tennis with friends and going on a long run through nature. My passion for helping others be the best version of themselves is something I take pride in. Thus, I am dedicated to creating a positive, relaxed environment in my lessons that helps students feel empowered, confident and motivated, allowing them to reach their full potential. I know just how much a good teacher can impact a student's life, and I strive to be that influence.

My teaching follows the Socratic style, a student-centred, inquiry-based approach that aims to develop integral skills such as critical thinking and problem-solving. I hold in high regard the influence of conversational learning, a bilateral enriching of the mind that fosters mathematical creativity. I encourage my students to find multiple methods to solve problems and to deduce the most efficient approach. I am a strong believer in making maths accessible and in universal mathematic talent. My job is to extract such talent and make maths a thoroughly enjoyable experience! Generally, my lessons would last 1 hour - consisting of a relaxed warm-up reviewing and targeting weaknesses and then covering ground in topics. A recycling of this method ensures there are no holes in learning! Having half a year of experience teaching maths in local primary schools as a volunteer, I know how to adapt to kids from all learning backgrounds. With patience central to my character, I am determined to make sure no topic goes over anybody. As someone who has experienced academic life in schools such as Westminster and City of London, and been awarded entrance into St Olave's, King's College Wimbledon, I am more than happy to assist students with any questions they may have, as I have provided for many aspiring pupils in the past! As such, I would be looking for students who are preparing for Maths Challenges (PMC, JMC, IMC), scholarship examinations (King's Scholarship to Westminster) and other public exams.
