About Jess

My name is Jes Valentine. I’m a student in my first year at the University of Edinburgh. I have always loved to read and write. Recently I have explored my passion for writing by writing and directing two plays, one of which I took up to the Edinburgh Fringe. I also love cooking and singing and sport.

About the lesson

Struggling with English at school? Look no further! I’m a hardworking student who has just been through all the same exam and revision stress that you are probably experiencing right now. English can be a tricky subject as it’s not the kind of thing you can get the hang of by simply reading the textbook. It involves understanding how form and content interact with each other to generate meaning. It involves being able to read an unseen text and accept that there can be multiple interpretations of it. But above all it is a subject that came about through a genuine love of the English language and how different people have used the same words to tell such different stories. In my tutoring sessions I want to help educate you on how to smash your exams by figuring out the best revision techniques for you personally. Whether that be flash cards or mind maps or verbal games. But I also want to inspire you and open your eyes to how much joy can be gained from the study of English literature. In my lessons I can help all different ages and levels at school. From struggling with grammar and reading poetry to how to write captivating creative writing and powerful essays. From coursework to exam revision. From general queries to specific ones on certain text. If any of the above sounds like you then I am the person to help you!
