About Nina

I'm Nina, a current Computer Science student, specializing in Systems Design. I am good at - and have always enjoyed - math, but I've never really considered it to be a solitary or independent subject; math is everywhere! Math helps you with everything, and everything helps you with math.

This is why one of my primary goals - and one of the main ways I craft lesson plans - is taking a subject, future job/career, or an avenue of improvement the student is already interested in, and figuring out all the ways math can - or already does - help them advance in it.
This way, we can start building a deep understanding of how math works, on a foundational level, without making it feel dry and uninteresting.

- *Diagnostic Consultation (*complimentary, required)
A brief conversation with parents to discuss goals and concerns, followed by a short, low-stakes assessment of the student. The results of both of these meetings determine the recommended program, or the need to build a custom, tailor-made program for the student. Available program structures include:

--- Post-Break Review & Preparation (only 3 slots available)
A 2–6 week accelerated program covering general review of the previous term and preparation for the upcoming term. Offered to all students after summer and spring break. (extended to existing students for any extended absence, including personal travel).

--- Strand and Strand-Component Concentration
A program concentrated on a specific curriculum strand (Number, Algebra, Data, Spatial Sense, or Financial Literacy, as designated by the Ontario Mathematics Curriculum) or a specific component within a strand. Focuses on identifying the root of the difficulty with the relevant mathematical system(s), and rebuilding the underlying foundation necessary for success.

--- Curriculum-Complementary Ongoing Support
A light, long-term, and preventative program maintaining consistent progress. Emphasizes problem-solving and connecting the theory to real-world application, in order to build a grounded, intuitive understanding of math.

--- Generalized Conceptual Framework Establishment
Suggested for students maintaining grades through memorized procedural solutions and techniques rather than genuine understanding. This program rebuilds foundational concepts within a unified system, in order to cultivate mathematical intuition and support long-term retention of knowledge and skills.

Details

- The diagnostic consultation is mandatory! In the consultation, I'd like to speak to the parents (preferably with the student present) for the first half, and speak just to the student for the second half. We will figure out goals, constraints, and if feeling a compatibility, possible logistics.

- For in-person visits, every session is actually booked as a 1 hour and 30 minutes session, which will count only as one full hour + one quarter of an hour. This is to account for any delays, unproductive time, small breaks during, and the fact that I open every session by having the student solve some questions and then going through them together, before officially starting the lesson.

- I strongly prefer in-person sessions; I don't really believe you can learn math well online. In order to make this easier for parents who'd like to keep their home a family-only space, I'm also able to meet at any public space available, such as study rooms offered by the library (or the student's school), or even in open-air spaces, weather permitting. Feel free to propose any location.

- I am open to being booked for group classes. The upper limit for group classes is 5 students, with the conditions that a) all students must be in the same grade, and preferably in the same class, and b) all students must have a a private 1-on-1 session per a number of group classes, in order to address any individual gaps/needs they might have. This number can be decided during the consultation. Additionally, I can waive this requirement if I feel a specific student doesn't have any additional needs (you will not be charged if it is waived, of course).

- It is much appreciate if you have a whiteboard available in this location. If not, I will bring something to that effect with myself.

- I'm currently crafting an online form that contains most of the questions that I'd need to ask during the consultation; I think it'd be able to jump-start this process. It will be added here once it's done!
