About Annie

Hi! My name is Annie, and I’m a student of English and Related Literature from the University of York. I am an experienced tutor, in both online 1-1 sessions and in classroom settings. Having recently been through the standard education system myself, I have knowledge of the current requirements, and the best ways to achieve desired grades.

I’m passionate about English, and have been able to successfully help other students to enjoy and better understand the subject. My experience of tutoring in a range of settings means I have been able to establish the best methods, always taking into account the needs of the specific student.

About the lesson

I structure my lessons in an individualised way, focusing on the specific texts which the student is studying, their exam board (if applicable) and their main goals in their English Literature studies. My lessons are interactive and engaging, with successful results, given the particular activities I use for memory retention and essay writing improvement.

In a first session, I always aim to find out the following information:

- the level the student is studying (GCSE or A-Level)

- the exam board the student is familiar with (e.g. AQA or Edexcel)

- the reasons for wanting tutoring (they may have specific goals, such as a grade that they would like to achieve overall, or they may feel like they need a little extra help to feel more secure with the subject)

- any specific area of the subject needing attention (e.g. essay writing, textual analysis, application of context)

- if homework would be helpful (the student may benefit from work outside of lessons, which can be really beneficial to the sessions themselves, but if they are already overwhelmed with other work I am happy to keep the work inside sessions only

I structure a series of sessions based on this information. These involve engaging activities and step-by-step methods to retain and apply information, guaranteed to improve their abilities and confidence in the subject.

I use exemplar questions and essays to guide students through how they would go about answering a given question, and how best to respond to an unseen exam question in a given time limit, allowing them to grow more self-assured in their abilities. The student will become comfortable with applying their knowledge and methods to any exam question.
