About Alex

***About Me***
My love for connecting with people, understanding their hardships, and helping them overcome English language barriers has enabled me to support hundreds of individuals in improving both their personal and professional lives. Above all, I recognize how deeply one's English proficiency can impact their personal, academic, and professional growth. That’s why I genuinely care about ensuring my students stay on track and make meaningful progress toward their goals.

**What Sets Me Apart:**
I bring a unique blend of expertise with a background in business studies, marketing, and entrepreneurship, complemented by 5 years of professional experience and 8 years as a self-employed English tutor. This combination allows me to provide practical business insights alongside effective communication strategies, ensuring my clients gain valuable, real-world skills.

**How I Can Help You:**
With eight years of tutoring experience, proven client results, and qualifications as a Teacher of English to Foreign Learners (TELF) alongside a bachelor’s degree in Business Studies, I am confident in my ability to help you overcome challenges such as:

- Moving Abroad: You dream of relocating but struggle to pass the required English tests, keeping you stuck in your home country.

- Career Advancement: Financial struggles weigh you down, and securing a new job with better pay could ease your stress and provide stability.

- Fitting Into a New Country: You feel isolated because language barriers prevent you from forming meaningful relationships.

- Academic Success: Managing your studies feels overwhelming, and working with a tutor could help you structure your assignments, graduate successfully, and attract top employers.

- Supporting Your Child’s Education: As a parent, you worry that your child is falling behind in English, and consistent tutoring could help them thrive in school.

***My Background & Experience***
I discovered my passion for teaching while traveling in New Zealand in 2017. My experiences exploring the world helped me develop a unique ability to connect seamlessly with people from all walks of life. Additionally, my background in business and marketing taught me how to build strong relationships with global clients through effective communication and personalized solutions. This blend of cultural understanding, business expertise, and teaching skills sets me apart from other tutors.

***Outside Work***
Outside of work, I stay active by going to the gym, running, and swimming. I’ve traveled extensively across Europe, Asia, and Australasia, having lived in New Zealand and Australia for several years. I now offer both remote and in-person tutoring. Close friends and family describe me as open-minded, caring, and approachable.

***My Teaching Approach***
Every lesson is planned in advance after taking in time to really understand the individual's needs. After the first session, which allows me to meet and get to know what makes the person tick, I focus on creating personalised materials that look to address their most pressing challenges or pain points. I set after class practice material and guide learners to the most suitable resources to use. My teaching style guides learners but also fosters their ability to self learn, leading to longer term positive outcomes.

***About the Lesson***
Through a student-focused approach, where the needs, interests, and learning style are at the center of the teaching process, this 60/90/120-minute session allows students the flexibility to focus on improving their core English skills the way they want. This could include:

***The Four Core Pillars of English***

1. Speaking: Expressing ideas clearly and confidently in conversation.
2. Writing: Structuring ideas effectively in written form.
3. Listening: Understanding spoken language, including conversations and lectures.
4. Reading: Comprehending and analyzing written text.

***The 3 Key Components of English***

1. Grammar: Rules for sentence structure, tenses, and word usage.
2. Pronunciation: Correctly producing sounds and words.
3. Vocabulary: Building a strong word bank to express ideas accurately and clearly.

**Who are these lessons designed for?**
These sessions are tailored to anyone who wants to upskill their English skills or has a particular goal to work towards. You could be a parent of a child who needs to pass a school exam (NAPLAN, ACER, OLNA), an adult who just moved abroad and needs English to better integrate into a new culture or a professional who wants to sharpen their English at work to improve their career prospects.

**Methodology:**
I believe it is pivotal to foster engagement in my students and deeper understanding from the learning material so they come away from my classes with lifelong learning skills. These lessons tailor activities to what best suits each student's unique needs and learning style.

**Lesson Structure:**
After the initial 30-minute consultation session which aims to better understand where the student needs most assistance, lesson plans will be built to dig deep into each area that needs improvement. Key strategies will be unraveled under the guidance of myself until my student understands them and can apply them independently.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

While I was living and working in Auckland, New Zealand I looked for a side-hustle to earn a bit more money to supplement my other incomes and realised that teaching English for foreign students was in high demand. I have also always enjoyed language as a way to express oneself and connect with others from multiple backgrounds.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

Over the 5 years or so I have been teaching general English language skills, I have been exposed to a range of learning needs from a wide spectrum of students of ages and backgrounds. In particular, I really enjoy teaching students to speak more clearly and fluently as this is key in day-to-day life for us to thrive as individuals personally and professionally. In fact, I enjoy tutoring a range of subjects under the wider English umbrella including writing, listening and reading skills to preparing students so they are ready to pass internationally recognised tests required for visa applications and work opportunities.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I follow many influencers online who are excellent at utlising communication through English to command the attention of their audiences and provide life advice. I follow individuals including Steven Bartlett, Jordan Peterson and Chris Williamson who teach me how to effectively grow my skillset, not just in the area of English but soft skills and personal development.
  • hat do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

To be a successful teacher, I believe it requires a balance between having a strong foundational knowledge of your chosen subject area, while also having proven experience solidified over many years with positive results for students. A growth mindset would be the cherry on top as you continue to pursue mastery as a teacher and further add value for current and prospective students.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

When I was 14-years old in middle school back in England, we had hand-writing classes every week. This involved connecting letters together and following the rules of handwriting but for most, it was a tricky skill to master. I, however, found a natural ability to join my letters together and this separated me from the rest of the class. One lesson, I completed my hand-writing activity and my teacher was so impressed that she complimented me in front of the whole group and allowed me to finish early.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

One clear challenge I experience is helping students upskill all areas of their English because it is such a huge job. It works better if sessions are focussed on a particular area such as email writing or learning the past tenses and even going more specific e.g. Learning how to use the preposition 'at' vs 'to'. Before I go ahead into classes with a new client, I set expectations so students understand how big a job it is to achieve noticeable improvements in their English language ability.
  • Do you have a particular passion?

Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different? I am passionate about self-growth and being one's own boss in various areas of life including learning new skills and professionally in our careers. Becoming self-reliant and open minded create opportunities based on my experience and these values are mirrored in the way I structure my lessons for students.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions)?

I love to help others while learning at the same time and meeting new people. It's a win-win for me.
