About Robert
I've had the pleasure of working over 6 years as a personal tutor, teaching fellow, research mentor, and writing coach, in subjects spanning physics, chemistry, materials science, computer science, and applied mathematics at the high school and undergraduate levels. I'm a passionate, positive, and hardworking individual who thrives when I'm working directly with others.
I take a concepts-first approach to learning and problem solving. Homework questions are not simply tasks to complete, but exercises that help us shape our understanding of the world around us. My goal is not just for my students to excel in their coursework, but to come away with the big picture ideas which underpin science at large, and an excitement for learning.
I'm excited to work with you!

Who my lessons are for
My lessons are well suited to anyone taking STEM classes in K–12, as well as intro-level undergraduates taking chemistry, math, or physics.
My perspective
The best way to learn a subject is to fall in love with it, and that's what I'll be helping you to do. When you're trying to pick up a difficult concept, it can be hard to see the bigger picture and put so many pieces of information into one cohesive whole. My approach has always been to intimately understand the intuitive connections that tie a subject together, as opposed to just trying to memorize as much material as possible. This approach is like a Swiss army knife: you'll be able to tackle just about anything a subject can throw at you by using your logic and your understanding of the governing principles at play. I'll help you construct a flexible and transferable style of learning that you can bring to whatever you might find yourself doing in the future.
A typical lesson
(1) Introduction of a new concept. This might follow a traditional outline described by a textbook or a professor. At this stage, the necessary equations and mathematical fundamentals are introduced.
(2) Practice questions. Just because you've seen an equation doesn't mean it makes much sense. Problems will be designed to give you a feel for the machinery of an equation or concept, and to discover the nuance that might not be obvious from a first impression.
(3) Review and recap. We'll take the time to look back and understand what we've just done, looking past the specifics of the problem to cement our understanding of the generality of the concept.
(4) Construction of the big picture. The goal here is to incorporate the concepts we learn into a larger body of interconnected ideas, which will let us tackle more complex problems with confidence rather than fear. A subject — calculus, algebra, geometry — is a collection of tools designed to help us engage with and explore new and unfamiliar situations. It's worth knowing what tools we have and what they're used for.
How I adapt to you
I'll always maintain clear communication with my student, asking them how they think about a concept. As I get a better sense of how you think, I'll adjust how I teach so the experience is as fruitful and fun as possible. I'll give constructive feedback on where you perform well, as well as places to focus for improvement.
Learning is a two-way street — I'm just as excited to learn from my student as I am to teach them. Thanks so much for reading!
Review
All of our reviews are collected by us and are 100% reliable. They correspond to a real experience lived by the teacher's students.
Perfect! Good at making me feel comfortable. Good at making conversation. Didn't criticize me for not knowing anything. Explained things behind the problem not just how to solve the problem. I felt like I could ask questions.

Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the tutor.
Robert is a fantastic tutor. He is very intelligent, patient, and explains difficult concepts in a way that is easy to understand. Highly recommend using him as a tutor!
High character young man. His extensive knowledge of chemistry/mathematics/physics (biology, too) is backed by rigorous coursework/research experience from a top tier university. He understands high level complexities, and can account for these complexities using just first principles (“the fundamentals”). For this reason, among others, Robert is an especially invaluable resource!
Robert is an incredibly helpful tutor who has a kind and patient demeanor. He has a gifted ability to take some of the toughest concepts in chemistry, physics, and math, and distill them down into digestible lessons, building from the foundations up. Rather than just lecturing to you boringly, he makes his lessons relatable and interactive. Beyond his talent for teaching, he is very engaging, maintaining the perfect balance between seriousness and fun during his lessons. You won’t be disappointed using Robert as your teacher!!
