About Asef

Scientific discovery and problem solving have been lifelong passions of mine. From an early age I was thoroughly fascinated by understanding the natural world and biological life as well as the art of mathematics and the process of building systems and tools for augmenting human efficiency. Thus, prior to beginning college I debated between pursuing a career in medicine or engineering and reconciled the two by choosing a double major in Biomedical Engineering and Computer Science. This was also inspired by having the opportunity to be involved in scientific research while still in high school. I started doing research when I was 15 and published my first journal article as a first author when I was 17, and that article has been cited 7 times now. At Johns Hopkins, I chose a focus area in Biomedical Data Science to bridge my two majors and continued research in computational biology and automated disease diagnosis using image processing and machine learning. My experiences have both deepened and broadened since. During my research experience I have published 8 more times as a first or second author, mostly related to ML and CV in medicine, and I have 21 citations and an h index of 3. I joined a student design team sponsored by two Johns Hopkins anesthesiologists and a medical device company BD to develop a novel extendable needle from market research and solution conception to design and prototyping which has been patented. In addition, I have completed industry internships in an R&D engineering role for a medical device company, as well as in automation engineering for a leading pharmaceutical company. I have applied my data science and programming experience by working for a consulting firm that assists pharmaceutical and biotech companies with commercial endeavors. I have also recently worked as a Software Developer for a large healthcare software company. Now at Stanford, I am studying in both the Computer Science department and the School of Medicine, specializing in Artificial Intelligence within healthcare.

About the lesson

One of my greatest passions is not only gaining more knowledge myself, but passing on this knowledge to others. I get overjoyed when being able to introduce someone to a topic that I find fascinating and seeing them master and appreciate it as well. As a result I have been actively pursuing teaching experience for years, from volunteering as a tutor in my high school library to working as a course assistant in college. I have also offered tutoring services via the online platform Wyzant in programming, data science, and other topics.
