About Tony Yu

I am an experienced private tutor specialising in 11+, GCSE and A-Level Maths and Computing, with a strong recent track record of helping students secure places at highly competitive schools including Tiffin, Wilson’s and Sutton grammar schools. I hold a BEng, an MPhil and a PhD, and I am also a member of the British Computer Society (MBCS), reflecting both my academic background and professional standing. My expertise in maths, computing, algorithms and problem solving allows me to explain complex ideas in a clear, structured and accessible way.

My decision to teach comes from a genuine interest in helping young people develop confidence and succeed academically. I enjoy breaking difficult topics into manageable steps and showing students that, with the right guidance and practice, they can make strong progress. My 11+ tutoring focuses on mathematical reasoning, problem solving, speed and exam technique, while my GCSE and A-Level teaching supports students in building secure understanding and achieving high standards. Across all levels, I tailor lessons carefully to each student’s strengths, gaps and goals so that they can progress with confidence and clarity.

About the lesson

My lessons are carefully tailored to each student’s current ability, learning style and goals. I begin by identifying strengths, gaps in understanding and any areas of uncertainty, then build a clear and structured plan to help the student make steady progress. My teaching focuses first on secure understanding, because strong foundations are essential for long-term success. Once a topic is understood properly, I develop accuracy, confidence and speed through guided practice, targeted feedback and carefully chosen questions.

For 11+ preparation, my approach combines focused teaching and practice by topic with regular exam-style exercises. This means students do not simply complete large numbers of papers without purpose. Instead, they first build skill and confidence in specific areas such as maths, reasoning and problem solving, then learn how to apply those skills effectively under timed conditions. This method helps students improve both their technical ability and their exam performance, while also reducing anxiety by making preparation feel manageable and systematic.

A typical lesson includes explanation of key concepts, worked examples, guided practice, independent questions and review of mistakes. I also teach students how to think clearly under pressure, manage time well and approach challenging questions with confidence. My aim is always to make lessons clear, supportive and academically rigorous, so that each student feels stretched appropriately while continuing to build confidence. Whether a student is preparing for 11+, GCSE or A Level, I provide a personalised and results-focused approach designed to help them achieve their full potential.
