About Abbie

I am currently enjoying my second year of University studying French, and through various stages of my language journey I have benefitted from hands-on tutoring experiences. I have found tutoring to be incredibly helpful at points where I did not feel so confident in my own skills, and would like to share my own positive experiences with other students. I have found volunteering to mentor students incredibly rewarding as I have been able to watch students become much more skilled and confident with their language as the sessions have progressed. Moreover, teaching is something I enjoy and am looking forward to continuing into the future, as I will be undertaking a placement year as an English language assistant in a French school from autumn 2021.

About the lesson

During tutoring sessions I will work to understand the specific skills and topics a student would most like to improve on, and devise my own unique activities to support their learning and improve their confidence in French language skills. This includes creating reading comprehension tasks, leading structured oral practice with prompt phrases, providing translation activities, and reflecting on feedback students have received from other classes to target areas of weakness. I can offer hour-long sessions with a very flexible timetable, to fit around other commitments of the student, and would be open to offering longer or shorter sessions as required. I am currently in my second year of studying French at the University of Exeter, and have previously studied French at GCSE and A-level, so I am familiar with the expectations for students working at this level of study. I have experience in tutoring French students via a volunteer programme at my university, in which I would lead small group sessions for beginners in studying French on a weekly basis throughout the academic year 2020-21. During these sessions I responded to the specific requests of students, adapting as their skills developed, to expand and reinforce their learning from their main course. Tasks I prepared for these sessions focused on several areas, including vocabulary acquisition, oral practice, listening comprehension, reading comprehension, writing, and translating both from English to French and French to English. These sessions would be suitable for anyone looking to boost their French language skills, but would be particularly oriented towards students taking French at GCSE or A level.
