About Erika

Ciao! I'm Erika, a native Italian speaker with a degree in Languages, and I'm a certified Italian interpreter. I've been teaching Italian since 2019, both privately and in cooperation with Italian schools in Australia, and in that time I've helped over 50 students, from complete beginners to advanced speakers, kids to retirees. After several years in Australia, I've recently moved back to Italy, so my students now get a little extra: the language as it's spoken here today, along with the culture, the stories, and the travel tips that come with it (and some photos too!). The best part of my job is watching my students grow in confidence and celebrate their wins: that never gets old.

Every lesson is built around you: your goals, your level, your pace.

Rather than following a fixed program, I like to get to know each student first: someone preparing for a trip to Italy, a teenager going on an exchange, and someone reconnecting with their Italian heritage all need different things.
I'll build on your strengths to grow your confidence, and gently work on the tricky bits until they feel natural.

I prepare all my materials myself and share them with my students for free: videos for listening, role plays for speaking, articles and short stories for reading, and homework if you'd like it (no pressure!).
If you're a complete beginner, I'll usually suggest a good book to guide us, but we can always find what works best for you. More than anything, I want you to enjoy the process and become a confident, independent Italian speaker.
Many of my students have been learning with me for years, and I think that says more than I ever could.
Book your free trial lesson and let's get started!

  • Did you grow up speaking this language? Or were you inspired by a trip abroad, an individual or a certain aspect of the culture?

I was born in Italy and lived most of my life there. Then, yes! I grew up speaking Italian, a language that I value immensely and that I fell deeply in love with!
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

A historical one would be Dante Alighieri, for sure: the father of our lovely language!
A living one is, in my opinion, Roberto Benigni. Another Tuscan guy of great culture, plus a very good actor!
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or expression in the language that you particularly like?

More than a word or an expression I love the fact that Italian people have an effective way to communicate just by using their hands and their body language. I think it's great!
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Italian is a language with great history and traditions. It is fully structured with its complex grammar and, let's be honest, it sounds great!!
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

For an English speaker, the main difficulty may be the Latin structure with a very vast verb tenses variety. Pronunciation can be difficult sometimes, but having a proper "guide" through the learning process and having a lot of passion would definitely boost the results.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

I remember I was terrible with grammar. I just hated it. I couldn't remember verbs, I couldn't tell the difference between an adjective or an adverb. I was just doing my assignments guessing the right answer. Then one afternoon, it was a sunny spring day, I just thought "I'm going to study this once and for all". And, I did! For some mysterious reason, I worked everything out and never ever had trouble with grammar anymore! I actually got to appreciate it and this helped me extremely in learning other languages, too!
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

I would say travelling has definitely made me appreciate my language. Noticing how people love it and how much a word can tell you about a country's culture was just making me feel super proud to be Italian!
