About Crystal

I am an enthusiastic teacher of Spanish who has been teaching and tutoring for over 30 years. In addition, I have tutored and taught ESL, French and SOL Remediation. I have a Bachelors degree plus in Spanish with a Minor in French and a high concentration of studies in English.

About the lesson

I am a highly energetic teacher who seeks to bring out the innate abilities that each student possesses. I have encountered many students who are fearful because they have had negative experiences in previous classes. My first step involves reducing the fear factor. I seek to win their trust by showing them: supreme patience, short cuts in learning, cognates and the large amount of Spanish words that exist in the English language. Gradually
I build their confidence by applauding their daily successes, no matter how large or small.
In addition, I primarily teach in the target language realizing that I have to make concessions for those who are not prepared for this technique. However, I will fluctuate between the 2 languages as needed until students become comfortable. As time passes, I gradually adjust the amount of English used in favor of more Spanish and encourage the participants to do so as well.
I am an highly energetic, passionate Spanish teacher who loves to teach and assist those who want to learn. I use a combination of methods and strategies based on the needs of the individual learners. I fluctuate between the use of "old school" and "new school methods, a combination
of teaching on a bulletin board or something similar with the addition of language apps/programs on line and "hands on activities. My lessons are especially geared towards those who have experienced minimal success, think that they are too old to learn, or who want to learn but are afraid.
My personal philosophy is that " all students can learn" provided the instructor is patient, flexible, and knowledgeable of multiple strategies and techniques which suit each individual learner. Initially beginning with the teaching of the Spanish alphabet, its vowels and consonant sounds in combination with basic expressions that are used on a daily basis, I first introduce "Survival Spanish". This is a list of daily phrases written in both Spanish and English that students are encouraged to use to experience "success". During this initial phase of learning, I don't over correct pronunciation or introduce grammatical concepts. Those will be introduced gradually and in sync with other concepts.
A typical day in a class starts with the greeting of them in Spanish, introducing the objective for the day, using a Bell Ringer activity to get them started which is usually a five minute activity. It could be a question, a fill in the blank, a word puzzle or anything that relates to the previously taught lesson. Usually its followed by the introduction of the lesson for the day with the students using it in a written form , then orally used individually or in a group. At the end of each class, the taught concept will be reviewed and homework that reinforces the concept will be given.
